Pirates and Politics!
An Asshat South Production

Moderators: UltimaAvalon (Pirate Affairs + Creator), JDodge (Colonial Affairs + Writer/Mechanics Person)

Welcome to Pirates and Politics. This game is about the colonization of the Caribbean, and piracy on the high seas. Form alliances as a member of the government, and start wars with the foreign powers as you all vie for control over the Spanish Main. But make sure to watch out for those pesky pirates stalking the waters. Or perhaps you are one of those pirates, pillaging and plundering your way through the colonies. You will either play to help your mother nation be the most powerful empire in the Caribbean Isles, or live the life of freedom as a Pirate, competing against other Pirates to amass the most booty and become the most notorious Pirate the world will ever know. Pirate or Colonial, your interactions with other players will determine who's got what it takes to sail these waters.

This is a very active, high speed game.
1 round represents 5 years, spanning between 1600 to 1750. That's 30 rounds, each 3 real-life days long.
Signing up means you are committed to 90 days of activity.
Don't make UA and JD cry cus 15 years have gone by, and they still can't find a replacement

The Pirate's Code (Rules for Being A Pirate):

You are a pirate! Congratulations on your freedom in sailing the seas. You start out with 3 crew, 3 goods, and a random number of a random type of goods. Your goal is to become the greatest pirate on the seas through pillaging, plundering and sacking your way through the Spanish Main. Each round, you may do one of the following:

Sack a port

- Attack a colony. You will pillage if you win, and will be captured if you lose.

Escape capture (only in captivity)

- Attempt an escape. First failed attempt at an escape means that you will stay in captivity. Second failed escape attempt means that you may either become a privateer in service of the king of the capturing nation, or you may retire from the game.

Trade with a colony

- Buy and sell goods with any colony you wish to trade with. Note that you cannot trade with a nation that has put out a bounty on you. Additionally, you may recruit more crew if you have enough goods to support them.

Attack a pirate

- You may attempt to find and attack a pirate. At the start of each turn, you will be given a list of pirates with the chance of encountering each of them. If you encounter them, you will engage in a battle. Winner pillages the enemy ship.

Attack a merchant ship

- You may attempt to find and attack a merchant ship of any nation. If the king of that nation is declaring war or peace with another nation, there is a chance that you will intercept this ship and stop the treaty. If you win the battle, you will pillage the enemy ship. If you lose the battle, you will lose a number of crew and some gold.

Accept Letters of Marque

- Accept a Letter of Marque from a governor. You will be forced to do whatever task asked of you.


The Art Of War (Combat Rules):

If you are attacking, you must choose to either attack recklessly, attack cautiously, or attack normally. Attacking recklessly will cause you to lose a bit of your combat strength, but increases the spoils of a victory. Attacking cautiously will increase your combat strength, but causes the spoils to decrease. Attacking normally has no effect.

If you are being attacked, you will be given the choice to attempt to repel the invaders, fortify yourselves, or defend normally. A repel attempt will increase your combat strength, but will make you more susceptible to higher losses. Fortification will lower your combat strength, but will cut your losses. Defending normally has no effect.

Economies, Populations, and Crews, Oh My! (Other Basics):

The size of a pirate crew/colony's population may not exceed the number of goods possessed by the colony/crew. Population increases based on economic factors. Crew increases through pillaging and trading.

The price of commodities within a colony will fluctuate based on the number of each commodity within the colony.

You may only sell as much of a commodity to a colony as they can afford; for example, if Santo Domingo is buying Spice at $22 apiece, and they only have 100 gold, you cannot sell more than 4 units of spice to them.
