Agnigi.
A world of one continent.
The great lake in the center of the land divides it into three sections. The great river
Divitias
flows from it to the southeast. The great mountains known as the
Erimos range
run from the seas of the northwest down to the lake. A final gap, the
great ridge
, runs from near the lake to almost touch the southwestern shores.
This land has forever been without change, as far as all known life can remember. Humanity has risen from weaklings to be the apex predator...at least, on the grander scale of things. Their combination of intelligence, tool-making, strength, speed, endurance, ability to domesticate wildlife, and sheer vast
numbers
has allowed them to overcome otherwise-superior foes, such that the great beasts of old are nothing but myth and legend.
Over time, three kingdoms of mankind formed: the nomadic
northern tribes
, the great
eastern kingdom
, and the
western empire
. The tides of time over thousands of years have seen countless countries rise and fall, with those three coalescing their power to dominate their respective domains. For hundreds of years, they have fought off rivals, used political alliances, suppressed populaces, and even committed genocide in order to secure absolute authority, until only they remained.
While all three factions have conflicted in the past, an uneasy stalemate formed where nobody could attack or risk an alliance with another, as the scales could easily tip against them with even the slightest turn in events. The northern tribes, while scattered, became hardened warriors able to mobilize quickly. The few beasts roaming their territories have fallen under their absolute control, allowing them to prosper against almost every threat.
The eastern kingdom was the first of the three to dabble in the supernatural and attempt to harness the great powers within. This, combined with their bountiful, resource-filled land, rendered them an economic power-house, able to suppress their foes by forces otherwise-unknown.
The western empire, though poor in agriculture, was ripe with ores. Investing in industry, they were able to create a great nation that ran like a well-oiled machine, responding to any threat with mechanical precision. With all three equally matched, none could be the victor.
Though tension remained high, ultimately, trade between them opened up. Through this came not only opportunities, but also stories, as the people began to intermingle. It is a well-known fact Agnigi is not without its monsters. Most of the day have long-since been destroyed, but those of the night have remained a nuisance, reappearing over time to horrifically decimate isolated villages, or lay waste to unsuspecting travelers.
It was around this time a race of humans previously-unknown shown up. Calling themselves
hunters
, these pale-skinned, red-eyed travelers, be it man or woman, specialized in fighting off monsters. Primarily employed in the south, it was theorized that these mercenaries may hail from the north, as some lost forgotten tribe, yet when asked about their origins, they refused to divulge unless to a member of their own clan.
Their international service, while starting as individuals, soon began to form a company, unaffiliated with any country and yet carrying political weight equivalent to one. Their protection for a cost became indispensable, as no other humans had any clue how to fight off the beasts of the night.
Irreplaceable, and growing in numbers, their power began to grow, especially after the rise of a dreaded beast known only as
lycans
. These beasts, they warned, were capable of turning humans into more lycans, and were thought the strongest, most ruthless beasts in existence.
The hunters continued the fight, even as the number of lycans grew far beyond the natural level, and it was at the great lake near the border between the tribes and the empire where the reason behind this disturbance brewing was revealed:
Dmitri Damanos
, once a mere bandit who had fled from the eastern kingdom, had formed a cult revering the beasts as gods. This cult, the
Wulden
, had all willingly undergone the process of lycanthropy. Things only got worse. Already an even match for the hunters, Dmitri was able to uncover a dark secret from the eastern kingdom, utilizing a mad science to recreate a long-since forgotten process to turn anything considered living into an unstoppable
undead
killing machine...including lycans.
With this absolute power, the Wulden were able to seize control of a large section primarily of the western empire, spreading across the land like a plague, including the discovery of a secret library that Dmitri was able to uncover, one which the hunters had desperately tried and failed to defend against.
And for good reason. In it contained ancient records detailing humanity's first triumph against the beasts of the night. In times of legend, monsters were all tame. They were kept in check by a force they feared:
vampires
. These pale-skinned, red-eyed creatures of the night were themselves beasts, and yet they had kept control over all the others for one simple reason...
...Vampires were once human. And like lycans, hold the power to transform humans into more vampires. The humanity of old, before the three nations, had collectively risen up and supposedly exterminated them, and it was only then that monsters began to prey upon humanity.
Those vampires were the hunters, hidden in the mist, exterminating their competition, bouncing back from their brush with death to recuperate, multiply, and prosper. Even coming from a monster, this the hunters knew would be taken as true. Exposed, outgunned by the Wulden, and now knowing they would lack the support of the three nations yet were facing the forces of darkness...the vampires, the hunters, became desperate, and in their desperation, stole the secrets of the occult.
Though unable to harness the strength of the undead, for vampires are already considered such, they were able to modify lycanthropy such to allow themselves to be infected with it, willingly hybridizing their whole race in the process, redubbing themselves the
Nosferatu
.
Now on equal fighting terms with the Wulden, the Nosferatu acted quickly and took as much territory as they could, primarily from the northern tribes, as to best offer them the resources needed to fight in the upcoming war. These events happened in less than a month, and humanity immediately, desperately, bonded together, fearing their fate.
If they could be turned against their will into undead, into lycans, into vampires, into some sick hybrid of two, what could they possibly do to survive? None of them had the experience necessary. The only action available: as with their ancestors, put their differences aside and bond together, in a desperate alliance against the supernatural creatures of the unknown.
This alliance was to be focused in the strongest remaining of the three factions, the eastern kingdom, but this triggered one final change: overnight, after the signing of the Humanity Treaty, an uprising of slaves rose up. This, because those slaves were secretly undead, hidden survivors of the experiments long-since discontinued, fearing for their lives thanks to their new bad publicity.
The land now divided between humans, wulden, nosferatu, and undead, a four-way factional war is brewing...
...Yet a
fifth faction
lurks in the shadows...a faction with an entirely foreign motive, one which sparked the war in the first place.
Until recently, the residents of Agnigi had no word for hell. They've invented one:
Welcome to Gistou. Population? everyone here.

Closest nation they hail from; there are

Your faction is your wincon
. They are not public information.
There are no sample PMs. Any party who is in need of a fakeclaim has the mod-given ability for one.
This is a multi-factional game.
Please pay very close attention to your win condition. Some players who you may not think are allies will be fighting for the same thing you are, and some players who you may think are fighting for the same thing you are may not actually be allies. The ambiguity inherent is meant to reflect the moral ambiguity of Gistou.
Loosely speaking,
there is at least one town faction
. They win if all threats to them are eliminated.
Loosely speaking,
at least one faction is definitely a scum/mafia faction
. They win if they control 50% of the living.
I offer a guarantee that, on D1, the players considered town outnumber the players considered scum.
Factions, loosely speaking, have general trends, sharing race, location, and nation. These traits are not, however, universal.
Upon the death of a player, all of their original personal abilities will be revealed, along with any changes to their personal abilities since then. Their original faction, and if applicable any change in faction, will also be revealed. However, no factional abilities will be flipped.
This game will use my understanding of Natural Action Resolution (insert obligatory CFJ rant here)...with one major exception:
recruits resolve
before

Please do note that, while this is a
very
flavor-heavy game, I designed it so that it cannot be broken by flavor-claiming.
No player is entirely vanilla!
This is because
every player, unless otherwise specified
, has a

they may perform
in addition to
any other action they may possess. This action is

In Agnigi, life was certainly far from peaceful, but it was at least comfortable. In most areas around the world, the vast majority of people would not have to worry about death. Monsters of the night were rare. Beasts during the day were almost unheard of. The three nations, locked in a stalemate, might have a border skirmish every once and a while, but otherwise, residents had little to worry about. There would always be cause for concern. Cities have muggings. Towns have poverty. But by and large, the word best describing the life of an average human?
Safe.
That world no longer exists. The security blanket once held so tightly has fallen, and in the new world, in Gistou, death is around every corner. It could come in any shape, in any form. And now, people have learned there are fates even worse than death that they may suffer from. Life, universally,
sucks
. But when faced with adversity, the denizens of the land have only one true choice to make: either stand up and fight, or lay down and die.
It's about time to figure out the fate of the world. With everyone having their own vision of the future, whose ways will prevail? Let's find out.
<<< All role PMs have been sent. As per the rules in your PM, you will need to confirm your role both by PM
(as to officially recognize your role)
,
and
in-thread
(as to officially recognize you are around)
. During this time, the thread will remain open.
As per the special mechanics in this game, EVERY player
must
confirm
before
day one can officially begin. Given this, no votes will count, however, you are free--even encouraged--to discuss anything while we wait on everyone. Players will have 72 hours to confirm: (expired on 2016-07-14 03:30:37).
I will send a reminder after 48 hours.
If players fail to confirm after 72 hours have elapsed, I will replace them. Their replacement will have 48 hours to confirm.
When I have received confirmation from every player, both in-thread and via PM, I will announce the beginning of day.
So in the mean time, enjoy yourselves. >>>

So players first reaction to seeing 19+ pages for pregame alone might be to think it a nightmare.
But...no worries. This was actually to be expected. I don't care what the playerlist is, if you have 28 players in a game, you're gonna have a lot of pages, and the moment I made the decision to let people talk in here during the pregame, I was anticipating this level of activity. In fact, I was actually expecting things to be worse; this is fairly tame all things considered.
So right now, I'm processing everything, in here, by PM, in topics, everywhere. This will take some time. I guarantee you, if you have a question, a request, comment, concern, or anything of the sort, I will get to it shortly. So, with luck, we'll be right on schedule.

In the modern world of Gistou, there are many who have been displaced from their homes from one cause or another, ranging across the six documented species. Maybe it was of their own volition, maybe they had no choice, but the sad truth is, remaining stationary in the current world is a luxury. Even simply dwelling in a single region is a risk, as most feel the need to roam the world in order to scrap by the resources to live life.
This exponential increase in wandering has given rise to a bit of an unusual practice. Many on the road have reason not to reveal their real names, as their names often carry with them some aura about where they come from, who they are, and other such details they may not wish the world to be privy to. Instead, they have adapted aliases, and with these aliases, have created personalities, masking their true selves.
Gistou now focuses on, and follows, 28 such individuals from all walks of life. Who they are, only they really know. But they all hide their past, and all have reason for it. Because in Gistou, knowledge has become power, thus, the more someone knows...the greater control they possess. This is how their lives must be lived. And, for the unfortunate, this is also how their lives will end: in a sad anonymity, someone--sooner or later--would die. Who will it be?
You decide.

Raptors are a mixture of bird and lizard, slightly smaller than the average horse. They have a beak, but sharp fangs within. They're largely--but not entirely--covered in feathers, and are neither warm nor cold-blooded, more like a mixture of both. Their feet bend the opposite direction of most bipeds: their knees are on the back rather than front of their legs. They have three claws on short, stubby arms, but have wings attached to them. Though too small for flight, these allow for brief air time, hovering. Their main purpose, though, is to provide a momentary speed boost.

Grodens are the nightmarish mix of lions, wolves, and bears, thrown into one. They're not quite as fast or versatile as raptors, but they are easier to manage and less vulnerable to injury. Horses are considered the boring, but practical, mount of Agnigi. (Similar to Earth.) While they don't have the ability to maul enemies, and they're slower than grodens or raptors, horses have a few advantages. Plenty of smaller things (such as working well in large groups of other mounts and good strength) contribute, though the main two reasons they are the dominant mounted animal is that they can function in any environment and are very well-suited to long-distance travel.

The most advanced level of weaponry in Agnigi is the single-action revolver. It is the favored weapon of officers in the Western Empire, and the best bandits usually have at least one. Other common guns include blunderbusses (for short-range) and smooth-bore muskets (for army use). Rifled muskets exist for sharpshooters and frontiersmen, but are otherwise considered less effective weapons of war.

While guns exist in Agnigi, they exist in tandem with other ranged weapons rather than as a replacement. In particular, the Eastern Kingdom was well-known for its crossbowmen, and the Northern Tribes were famous for their mounted archery hordes using their signature recurved bows. Furthermore, all three nations had regiments (plural) of elite, trained longbowmen. Other ranged weapons (like blowguns, slings, knives, and spears) aren't unknown to see use either.

The Great Lake is a highly-prized area for many reasons. Among them? The wood there is considered second to none, making excellent material for bows and arrows. Furthermore, it is one of the main natural habitats of the raptor, and their feathers are said to be the best for fletching.

On Agnigi, humans lose youth at a slower rate than on earth. They are considered in their prime until their 40s. From the age of 40-60, they are the earth equivalent of in their 30s. 60-85 is considered middle-aged. 100 is the average retirement age. Old age kicks in at around 120. The average lifespan of an Agnigi human is therefore 160. This is why vampires' immortality went unnoticed in spite of hunters existing in-public for dozens of years: people thought that hunters simply had a longevity greater than the average human.

@Mastin: Can we enforce some sort of spam rule, because the game is already extremely long without BS like what Math is pulling right now
If any behavior exceeds what I deem acceptable standards, I will make that known.
I did not notice a problem in Mathblade's posting, since there were in fact posts in-between Mathblade's. (Ironically enough...including yours.)
If the spam had exceeded a certain amount, I may have intervened. But while Mathblade was approaching that limit, they did not in fact exceed this limit. Especially when you take into account their post count total. A series of catch-up posts, and then not being around for a while, is an acceptable method of playing. Mathblade actually has fewer posts than you do. They're concentrated in specific areas, but they are not the spam you are presenting them as.
That's my ruling.
I do encourage self-moderation in posting: controlled amounts. If people do fall into spam, I will be intervening. But this has not happened yet.

Lycans, like many beasts, have a wide variety to them. What a lycan looks like depends largely on who their progenitor was, and if applicable, who the human transformed was. Depending on these factors, you can get a lycan who moves almost like a groden, striding on all fours, or you can get what is essentially a furry human being. The most dangerous of lycans, of course, are those that are in the middle: having the strength of the beastly lycans, while having the intelligence and versitility of a human.

Wuldens, by virtue of the process creating them, automatically begin to take on the appearance of the most fierce lycans. However, instead of the natural brown (or rare black), their skin and fur take on the deathly palor of the undead, turning into a pale, ghostly gray. This monstrous form is why wuldens are, in the world of Gistou, akin to demons on earth: they're absolutely
terrifying
to see, and nearly impossible to kill.

On Agnigi, lycans were widely known. While not exactly common knowledge, it was also no secret (thanks to the hunters) that they had once been human. What WAS unknown to most, however, was that some lycans--not all, but some--have the power to transform BACK into humans. With the rise of Gistou, this information became much more widely known.

Yeah, about that.
If you're using meta in the game, that's all nice and good (assuming the game the meta is from is, in fact, completed), but aside from that? Keep comments about other games...in those other games. This should be possible, if that game's thread is still open.

Since some lycans have the power to transform into humans, it is no surprise the races containing the lycan strain have this potential as well. In wuldens, it is virtually unused: after all, why would they willingly spend time in their 'inferior' form? However, the most dangerous of nosferatu are the ones who have this gift, as it allows them to take on a fully human appearance, in skin tone and eye color.

The Great Lake is thought to be the place where all life originates from, though nobody knows for sure. At the very least, the great lake region remains, to this day, one of the areas with the greatest diversity of life, and is considered the most wild place to live thanks to the dangers within. It is an uncivilized frontier, one which has never been conquered.

KuroiXHF is at L-2.
It is unknown how the endless seas on the edge of Agnigi work. If water was flowing freely from the great lake to the Divitias into the endless oceans without a method of coming back, then the endless cycle wouldn't be so endless. However, snowfall from the Erimos Range and northern lands flows into the lake. This has given rise to the "widdershins theory": that the water flows into the ocean, evaporates, travels north, and freezes, falling. This theory would explain why the lands west of the divitias and south of the erimos range are largely desert: the cycle never reaches them.

Gotta go to bed for the night (I work tomorrow morning), so no detailed VC.

Also, I have a replacement lined up for Franky, so the slot is guaranteed to be filled, but I'm waiting on a response PM before I send their role PM to them and announce it in-thread. That will unfortunately have to wait until tomorrow. (Apologies, work is the weakness in my schedule beyond sleep.)

You know, I knew there would be a shitstorm come morning (I do apologize that I needed to go to bed right as it was beginning, but real life does regrettably trump mafia life and I did not have time to address it), but I thought it would be something where I could, slowly, piece by piece, work through what I would, and would not, need to do, and that in the mean time, the game could continue.
Apparently, I was wrong. I've received some concerns which justify a thread lock. So, hold, please. I've got a LOT to sort right now, and this may take a while, but unfortunately, for something like this, it is necessary.
Moderator: The use of Red Text was site banned many years ago. Can we have an official ruling on its use in this game?
<<< First off: The parts highlighted by the colors red and blue are literally quotes of my own post. As in, they come directly from post 3.
Second: while it's true red text of truth was banned many years ago (I was there, I saw it happen, you don't need to tell me), this does not mean players cannot use the colors red or the colors blue. Suggesting as much is, quite frankly, idiotic. The colors red and blue in post 3714 were, very clearly, used as nothing more than highlights.
As such, no action will be taken. Thread remains closed for the moment, as this was not the only concern which was raised. >>>

Gray, silver, white, red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, cyan, brown, whatever, doesn't matter. To be on the safe side, however, if they choose to write something in a color for a purpose other than highlighting, they should make their whole post be in that color, as to avoid any potential strategical advantage, e.g. the red text of truth trust tell. So if you want to write posts entirely in red...go for it. If you want to highlight a phrase in red...no rule against it. <<< And now, word on the other main concern raised.
As per post 3, it is very explicit: any player in need of a fakeclaim has the mod-given ability for one. This, by
necessity
, includes faction.
There are multiple factions in this game. I will not disclose them.
However, as long as a player is
paraphrasing
their factional wincon (or their fakeclaim's factional wincon), there is absolutely nothing stopping them from claiming any aspect of their factional wincon, real or fake. It is not a quote of their role PM to claim their faction's color. It is not a quote of their role PM to claim their faction by name. It is not a quote of their role PM to paraphrase a factional wincon (as always, if you have doubts about a paraphrase, run it through me!).
This may, of course, not be a wise decision. Players claim at their own discretion, and therefore at their own risk.
If someone is read as confirmed town because they have claimed anything, then that is the person doing the reading's decision, made at their own personal risk, because as above, any who could need a fakeclaim have one at their disposal, and therefore assuming otherwise is incorrect. No moderator action is required. Game continues. >>>
