Game Status: Game Over, man. Game over.

The Royal Family of Jellugi (formally consisting of the King, Queen, Prince, and Princess) have for many years been in power, through an unjust seizure of the throne. Their laws have been appalling, their use of power tyrannous. Taxes are inversely proportional with overall happiness: too high and too low, respectively.

But no longer! The citizens have revolted, and the Royal Family has had their lines of communication severed, and they have been forced to go into hiding. Through cloak and dagger methods, they very much intend to put down the rebellion through any means possible, whilst appearing to be regular members of the lynching mob.

This is... Royal Family Mafia.

Jelly’s Rules

Please read the rules carefully, as there may be alterations from the standard sets of rules. Most of these rules have been stolen and edited from so many places that it would take too long to reference all of the sources.

Rules On what is Allowable:

[01] This is only a game, and I expect all Jellugians to remain somewhat civil (although I understand you are essentially a crazy, lynching mob). I will not accept excessive abuse upon freedom of speech: obscenity, profanity, libel, and fighting words will not be tolerated, and if you push it, Cardinal Ibelly reserves the right to have you replaced. In other words, be respectful to all players, as well as the mods.
[02] Do not talk outside of this thread, unless your role PM explicitly says you may do so, and even then, you are restricted to night-time for all out-of-thread conversation.
[03] Do not edit or delete your posts in any way, shape, or form. Once you have posted something, it is there for good, unless I find reason to alter or delete your post myself.
[04] Do not quote your role PMs in any way, shape, or form.

This also applies to night conversations

Technical Rules

[01] Each day the town must decide on a lynch. Once a majority has been reached on a player, that player will be lynched, regardless of any subsequent unvoting.
[02] To vote for somebody, please use bold tags. For example,

[04] If the game lags, I will place a deadline, which may or may not be retractable. I will probably not let any day go past two real time months, excepting for if Mafia Scum crashes...

[05] When a deadline has been placed, I will require only a majority of what would normally be a majority for a lynch (i.e. 20 players needs 11 to lynch, so I would require 6 to lynch in such a scenario). If this number is not reached, day will end in no-lynch, and the game will progress directly into night.
[06] If two or more players are tied for the most votes when a deadline hits, and they have garnered the required amount of votes to be lynched under a deadline, the player who reached that number of votes first shall be lynched.
[07] You may vote no-lynch if you wish. A majority voting for no-lynch will end the day, and the game will progress directly into night. To do this, simply

[08] Nights will last a maximum of 5 real-time days. If you have not sent me a night-choice by that time (should you have one), you will have no night action.

Day One

Shadows of sunlight dance across the graveled centre of the courtyard. Encompassing that space loom the four walls of Jellugi Castle, comprised of checkered stones forged from alabaster and ebony. The town readily wakes, and descends various staircases to make their ways to the designated argumentation arena.

Rebellion had proven both simple and difficult: each townsperson had been able to secure their own living quarters within the castle with ease, but none could determine the location of any of the Royal Family they wished to overthrow. It was unanimously decided that before society could be restored to balance, the reigning family must be summarily executed. Upon hearing such news, the tyrants had assumed new identities within the town, and had somehow become indistinguishable from the rebels by donning new clothing and attitudes.

Twenty-two people stand around the one body found facedown in the square. He wears a cap which jingles hollowly in the wind, and a harlequin suit of many colors.

The Portcullis is down, sealing the first exit.
The Drawbridge is raised, sealing the second exit.

King Jelly opens his eyes from meditation. The Queen shakes him by the shoulders frantically. "Love, wake up! Opportunity has arisen! This is no time for daydreaming: this is time for actualizing our dreams." A light, vanilla perfume wafts from her face, while her lustrous silver hair shimmers under the candlelight. The silhouette of her gown dances on the alabaster walls like a leaf in the wind.

“Take the pawn!” she shouts.

“Wait a moment, my dear” responds King Jelly. “This isn’t a chess game. What in Jellugi are you thinking?”

“Oh. Wrong thread,” she replies, walking off, suddenly embarrassed. The King follows her back down to the courtyard, where they blend in, once again, with the mob.

Twito tries to sneak to E8, where he is captured and killed.

A single black feather twirls around one of the rookeries in the far eastern tower of Jellugi Castle, dusting the alternating stones of white and black. The dark bird gives a cry of annoyance, as it flutters in a soft, low arc towards the courtyard. The sun inches its way into a position such that its rays cast directly through the slits in the same tower used for defensive archery, casting a wall of shadowy bars…

LuckayLuck stirs from his slumber, and his eyes open in horror. He arises slowly, wondering if he is dreaming, and stumbles his way to the barrier in front of him. He reaches out towards the bars… and understands that they are solid metal. The sunlight dapples brightly on his face.

Swiftly and efficiently, the crow angles its way to a body laying face-up near the gallows. It immediately attempts to peck out the juicy eye fluids from the deceased, but they are effectively sealed away by a menacing, black mask.

Mariyta, Axeman, Vigilante, has been killed!

The Portcullis is down, sealing the first exit.
The Drawbridge is lowered, allowing for one escape route.
The Jail is occupied by LuckayLuck, who cannot be lynched today.

A sole drumbeat echoes through the square.

Arafax is led, via a slow and solemn procession, towards a small set of rickety, wooden stairs. He turns his head behind him to look at the crowd, who all stand silently with faces set in grim disapproval. He takes a sharp inhalation of breath, and tries to calm himself.

Buddle

-uddle-uddle-uddle-uddle-uddle-uddle-

Bong

His left foot creeps up onto the first stair.

Bong.

He momentarily tries to put up a feeble struggle, but cannot wrest free from the bonds tied around his wrists.

Bong.

Upon reaching the apex of the dais, a noose is fitted around his neck. Arafax closes his eyes and grimaces, while still being forced to hear the final, suspenseful drum-roll.

Clack!

The platform drops from beneath his feet, and his neck is snapped from the momentum of the fall. He hangs motionless.

Upon investigation, it turns out he has a few Jellugian coins in his pockets, and nothing more. He was but a peasant.

Arafax, Peasant, Townie, has been lynched!

Night Three

Silently, he sneaks across the Throne Room. His eyes cast to the left, and note the hallway filled with shadows. His eyes cast to the right, noting the giant portrait of the Royal Family. They smile at him innocently, and it seems as if their own eyes may be following him.

With a final burst across the room, Zindaras reaches the King’s Throne, laying his head upon the seat. “Yes, yes… once the Royal Family is gone, all will be good and well. Mmm, mmm.” He begins caressing the velvet with his hands, while eyeing the jewel-encrusted arms of the chair. “It shan’t be long now,” he whispers.

Just then, a small door from the portrait silently swings open, which goes unnoticed by Zindaras. The shadowy specter glides silently and swiftly into place.

Zindaras turns around. The force from the blow turns him around again. He is found dead the next morning in the courtyard.

Zindaras, Usurper to the Throne, Unknown, has been killed!

The Portcullis is down, sealing the first exit.

The Queen whispers hurriedly to The King, in a hidden room inside the castle. They can hear various townspeople walking around on the other side of the wall. Distracted, the Queen brushes away a few cobwebs with her candle, and the spider keeping watch over the area tries to scurry away. Its legs squirm in death from the pressure of the Queen’s left hand moments later.

With a meaningful glance, the two make eye contact. “This should go quite well,” he chuckles, to be answered with a quick kiss on the cheek. “Let us not be late. We can’t be absent at a time like this.”

They slip back into the hallway while nobody is watching, blowing out the candle and joining in with the rest of the town while filing towards the courtyard. They take their respective positions, silently splitting up in the crowd so as not to be associated with each other too easily. It is eventually decided that IH needs to be the next to go.

The town has a horrible feeling of déjà vu, as IH is led to the gallows.

There is a glint of steel in a dark room, beneath the catacombs of Castle Jellugi. The hurried breaths of a man with ragged hair carrying an armful of turnips breaks the silence, followed by the shuffling of cloth as he hobbles along.

"Gotta save... gotta save... must save them..."

He tosses a few turnips over his right shoulder, panting and hobbling.

"Oh, Cardinal Ibelly, please watch over me in such dreadful of times. Blessed be these turnips which ward from evil... gotta save..." He tosses another turnip over his shoulder, but surprisingly, it does not make the sound of one thudding to the floor.

"Who goes there?" Maz Medias asks, half-turning around. And he is answered with something he did not expect. The steel glint fades away into the night like a butterfly into mist.

His body is found neatly laid out in the Courtyard. Alongside him is the unfortunate body of LuckayLuck, dressed in a pauper's attire.

The Princess slides innocently into the crowd assembled in the courtyard, where Jack is being led up to the top of the gallows.

Suddenly her eyes widen. "I think that's Daddy," she says to a man next to her. "Let me through," she pleads, pushing past the townspeople, "I think that's Daddy!" More urgently, she starts making her way closer to the gallows. "I think that's Daddy,

After the lever is pulled and Jack is swinging back and forth, she finally breaks free into a place where she has full view of the sight before her.

Suddenly she rushes forward.

"Daddy! No! Oh God, you've killed Daddy!" She falls to her knees, inhaling sobs and dropping her teddy bear to the ground. "Why? Why would you do this?"

In the shadows of the moonlight, the Watchman turns the crank. His hands work furiously on the iron bar, and sounds of metal-on-metal clank poignantly together somewhere behind the stonemasonry. Black bars begin ascending from neatly punctured holes in the ground, like ghosts from the grave.

He exhales, and watches his breath dissipate into the coldness. Stopping, VitaminR rubs his nose with the back of his hand when he hears something moving down on the barbican below the parapet which he had been patrolling.

"Who goes there?" he shouts somewhat nervously. Keeping one hand steady on the crank, he cranes his neck about, but sees no signs of life. Adjusting his helmet and muttering to himself, he peeks down the curtain wall down to the portcullis, which is halfway raised.

"Damned castles. Noises everywhere."

Chains clank once more. Another footfall.

His body is found in the center of the courtyard. Around his neck is a black, steel link of chains.

He starts sobbing whilst two members from the crowd look at him pityingly, but still push him firmly towards the wooden dais. As he is led up the steps, he faints.

His slack body is fitted for the noose, and the crowd remains deathly silent as the floor drops beneath his feet – his body jerks when his full weight is put on the rope, and it begins turning with the slight breeze drifting in the courtyard.

After a few moments, a number of people begin rifling through his pockets... messages to and from the Prince are found.

It appears he was telling the truth.

HackerHuck moans as he is dragged across the courtyard. "Oh God, no..." he mutters helplessly. "Please don't kill me, don't kill me, have mercy..." The fist dragging him by the back of his shirt does not relent as he is drawn closer and closer to the gallows, his feet dragging behind him.

From his position, HackerHuck watches the gravel go past underneath his eyes in the pale moonlight, listens to it crunch beneath his assailant's feet, and sadly notes the sounds of keys clanking ominously on the man's hip. Looking up, he only sees a figure masked in shadows.

Building his resolve, he begins to query his antagonist. "Who are you?" No response. "Where are we going?" Gravel crunches. "What are you going to do with me?" Keys clank.

They walked past the gallows towards a large set of bars, which are opened with a squeal, and HackerHuck is unceremoniously thrown within the cell. The figure stands looking at him silently, then slams the door with a sullen

*thud*

, twisting a key in the lock for finality.

The man's eyes suddenly shine bright, and blood begins dripping from his mouth. There is a soft whisper of sound, and Occult falls dead while a second figure slinks back into the shadows.**

When the town awakens the next morning, they find to their dismay that Occult was not the only death – but Battle Mage also lays with his body face-down in the gravel, arms outstretched. A few papers blow in the wind from his pockets.

Cardinal Ibelly looks down from a window, where he has been for the past six days, untouched and isolated – fasting and praying. His face betrays weariness.

Cogito Ergo Sum sighs dejectedly. His eyes wander to the skies, as if begging askance of a miracle. With none forthcoming, he is led to the gallows.

After being fitted with the noose, he is asked if he has any last words.

"Yarr!"

His neck snaps cleanly.

A rustle of a cloak. A rustle of dried leaves. A nose sniffs the air. Somewhere, a stair creaks. A door slams. A key is turned. A chain is clanked, a crank is turned. The cold mechanisms of steel within the castle whirr to life. The portcullis rises slowly in the moonlight, a beckon to the darkness beyond.

... and so it begins.

Two sets of foots descend down two separate stairwells. Two separate shadows make their ways inside many rooms in the castle. Some wrong turns are taken, but are quickly remedied – there is anticipation and death in the air. Mist seeps from the walls for no apparent or logical reason, such that the footfalls are further masked in mystery, both in purpose and in location.

Reverberations.

of weaponry, and the deeds are done. Blood is drawn into the stones of the castle, and the remnants of the deaths are nowhere to be found in any of the halls. The bodies, again, are mysteriously found in the courtyard.

Seven tired Jellugians connect eyes with each other once more. Some breathe to themselves to keep calm. Others squint their eyes and try to hold in tears, by ignoring the thoughts of all the dead people they have been forced to see and kill in the last week. Feet shuffle, and hands are twisted.

Eventually, they decide that Toaster Strudel needs to go. She protests her innocence, but none are willing to change their ways at this point – things need to be done.

As they fit her for the noose, they brush aside the silk blue cloth at her neck. She asks them to hold her sword for her, and to please stash it in the sixth stable to the right. As a final request, she asks to be allowed to wear her cuirass so that she would die swifter with the weight.

Save the Dragons walks over the stained earth, at the prodding of those few around him. He licks his lips in trepidation, and finds he his mouth is dry, his lips chapped. He suddenly halts walking, looking silently and forlornly at the wooden structure erected before him, so elegant on paper and so hideous in actuality.

Without words, he ascends to the top of the dais, and allows himself to be fitted, while gazing into the abyss...

Should the Queen of Jellugi investigate you, however, she will mistakenly see you as just another lowly peasant… and during the very next day, you shall murder the Queen in a fit of rage. From that point on, you will have usurped her throne and become a solitary force with the ability to kill one person during each day (though you will send your choice to me during the previous night). In other words, you shall become a raving, knife-wielding lunatic. Should this happen, you win when everybody else is dead (or nothing can prevent the same), and you shall also be granted a 1-Shot Nightkill Immunity, although you will not be told when or if this ability is ever used up.

Axeman (Mariyta)

You are the Axeman of Jellugi. Your whole life, practically all you’ve known how to do is to bring axes down upon people’s necks. Upon hearing of the rebellion, however, you thought it might be best to get a different job. Until that time, each night, you may walk under the Portcullis to retrieve your axe, and choose one unlucky person whose head you will place on the chopping block in the middle of the courtyard and kill them. You win when all Anti-Town roles are dead, and at least one townsperson is left alive.

You are the Magician of Jellugi. You have tried to find a way to rid yourself of the current King and Queen for years, seeing as they do not take your sage advice. If you are killed during that night, you will take that player’s vote with you in death, and they will not be able to vote the subsequent day. You win when all Anti-Town roles are dead, and at least one townsperson is left alive.

Note: If you are role-blocked on the night of your death, your choice will still go through since you use it in death.

You are the overzealous religious nut of Jellugi, well loved by all in your village for standing on street corners screaming about how the world will end and throwing turnips at those who disregard you. If that person is targeted to die, you die in their stead unless you are protected. There are also dire consequences if you are lynched: you are not overly religious for nothing. You win when all Anti-Town roles are dead, and at least one townsperson is left alive.

You are a Watchman of the Castle of Jellugi. Originally forced into service by the King and Queen, you have patrolled the crenellated walls of the Castle for years. Ever since you have heard of the rebellion, however, you two have united in the hopes of finally put an end to the tyrannous rule you have endured. Your fellow watchman is ____. You may talk with your partner during the night. Your partner does

have guaranteed innocence. If your partner is not pro-town, they will also have a PM identical to this one in addition to their actual role.

The two of you also have a key to control the castle’s Portcullis. In order to open the Portcullis, (if both of you are alive) you must each separately indicate to me that you wish to open the Portcullis. This will have unknown affects. If only one of you is alive, that Watchman will have full control of the Portcullis after taking possession of the second key. If both of you die, the Portcullis will be left open for the remainder of the game.

You win when all Anti-Town roles are dead, and at least one townsperson is left alive.

Alternatively, although you may do so only once, you may put one person to the sword during the night in lieu of protecting somebody. You are the Master Swordsman of Jellugi. When you were a child, you were scorned by the King of Jellugi, and ever since, you have vowed to defeat him in a duel. If you successfully find him, you instantly engage him in a duel, and unless he is successfully protected, you will slay him. However, your power does not come without perils: if you mistakenly investigate a Pro-Town player, you run a 25% chance of engaging them in a duel and slaying them. Okay, now that the game is over, some comments from me. First comments about the set-up, and then things I

wish wish wish

I had changed.

Mafia and Triggered SK Mechanics

1.) Around December of 2005 – when I was making this set-up – I thought it would be very interesting to have two lines of succession in the same mafia group. I decided one side would be killing, and the second side would be investigatory. Of course, since killing was the more important of the two lines, I had a 3::2 ratio of killers::investigators, with {King, Prince, Lost Prince} on the one hand and {Queen, Princess} on the other.

2.) In addition – and this is mostly due to my background in mafia before coming here – I wanted to experiment a little bit with a "split" mafia; in that the mafia did not have full communication with each other. I thought this would encourage sending 'hidden' information to each other during the day, such as investigation results from the Queen. Of course, now that I've been playing for quite some time I think this sort of communication more much more risky than any possible reward it could achieve.

3.) With #1/#2 combined, I knew this would set an order of importance within the scum-group for a "keep X alive" factor. The killers would need to be kept alive over the investigators, and the scum would also have to take into account who they would be able to communicate with at night should there have to be any shifting. Basically, the Prince/Princess were expected to make some sort of code to make between each other for if the King/Queen died and they lost communication, such that they could communicate during the day if necessary. Risk > reward, as well as replacements clearly make this an unsatisfactory tactic, but at the time of creating the set-up I thought I was setting the stage for some extraordinary clandestine dialogue.

4.) I am usually pretty generous with giving safe-claims, and this game was no exception. The mafia group itself had 2 safe-claims; the spy-martyr had 2 safe-claims; the SK had 2 safe-claims; and the Queen could essentially help make more informed fake-claims with her investigative nature. Of course, the mafia also had a couple 'abilities' they could claim to have – that being role-name investigations and having control of the Drawbridge. All scum should have had a shot at getting away with some sort of power role claim. I also gave the town a few "unprovable" abilities (such as the Magician) so that powers didn't need to "proven" full-circle in order to sound believable.

5.) In addition to investigating, I wanted the Queen to have a larger effect on the game. Hence, I included two "triggering" roles – the Lost Prince which could be "found" and the "Usurper to the Throne", which could become a Day-SK, with the Queen as the first target. I was hoping both of these triggered roles would try to do something to get themselves investigated by the queen in particular, by dropping hints or something. Once again, this falls back onto my earlier thoughts that the game would be chockfull of secret conversations going on in plain sight.

6.) Of course, the Queen's investigatory power also makes it so the scum are much more likely to make sure they nightkill power roles, leaving townies to be lynched during the game (which occurred very effectively in this game).

7.) Strange as it seems, I do like it when SK's have a reasonable chance at winning, so I tried to do so for the one I included in this game. Firstly, I gave the SK the option to remain town once investigated or to flip – and they knew this choice was coming before it occurred (so that they could not mistakenly "think" they are town and then be suddenly forced to change alignments, as I'm sure most people know I do not approve of). The switch comes with three bonuses: firstly, the queen dies, secondly, the SK will get a 1-Shot nightkill immunity, and thirdly, up until that point all investigations on the SK will have come up town. And of course, the later in the game, the more the SK will know about the set-up. This was a role which required great precision to play, but with potentially extravagant rewards.

Town Mechanics

1.) First off, I have found that I am not really fond of games being dominated by Cop/Doc combos – even back in the seemingly forgotten time that was 2005. I decided to use what I considered (and still consider) to be an elegant solution - a Cop that only gets investigations so long as the Cop is not himself targeted. This mechanic ended up working beautifully, and I would not be surprised if I'm tempted to use it again in the future. This also effectively guarantees that for each night the scum try to kill the Cop, even if they are not successful, the Cop will not receive a result. As I anticipated, roles like the Martyr and the Queen kept the Cop from receiving a damaging amount of investigations. This limitation on the Cop was the reason the Queen could only investigate each player once; else she could "investigate" the Cop every night in order to role-block him.

2.) I also wanted to avoid a possible "Martyr protect X, Doctor protect Martyr" for 2 people being guaranteed protected (since neither the Martyr nor X can die in that situation). I generally don't care for full-doctor roles in the first place, but I thought a single Martyr would be too weak, and two Martyrs would likely just end in a mislynch. As such, I compromised and tried a 50% Doctor. I would not do this in the future – I am not particularly caring for "chance" roles, although at the time of creation I was experimenting with different types of roles.

I later added on the 1-Shot Vig ability to the 50% Doctor on account of:

3.) I didn't want the town to have a tremendous amount of nightkilling power, so I took actions to tone it down. Firstly, the Vigilante had a hitch, in that the Portcullis Keepers had to raise the Portcullis in order for the Axeman to get his axe (acting as a Tooth Fairy role).

Similarly, the Master Swordsman could only kill one particular scum – the King – and could not kill any of the other scum even if he tried. And of course, he still ran the risk of killing townspeople if he dueled them (25% chance). I tweaked through a few versions of this role. I did not like a "kill a townsperson or King" version, because I felt it would be giving too much information for if his target didn't die – it would make it very likely that target was simply a scum other than the King (i.e. this would make the role more investigative than it should be). So I had to make the kill not absolute if he targeted the wrong person. I decided 25% was a fair compromise, in that it would likely cause the Swordsman to keep it in his pants for a number of nights, knowing his chances of hitting his single target was slim.

But I did want to give the town

some

say on night-kills, so I decided to give the Yellow Knight incentive to do something other than protect with a 1-Shot Vig ability.

In retrospect, I would completely eliminate the Master Swordsman role – if anything, I feel I should have made the Master Swordsman be able to kill any role

except

for the King, since that particular role is so essential for the scum to keep alive in order to stand a chance at triumph.

4.) I also think role-blockers can be insanely powerful roles, so I decided to temper the strength of the role-blocker in this game. Not only did the Court Gaoler role-block, but they also made that person unlynchable! So even if they managed to "confirm" a scum, the town might not be able to lynch them. Of course, I did not want the Gaoler role-blocking the same person continuously, so I restricted the role to waiting at least one night in-between locking up the same player twice. I think this was a fairly elegant role, in terms of ups-and-downs. Vigilante justice notwithstanding (especially with the lack of such roles), this role was meant to both help the town while hurting the town -- unless the Gaoler managed to lock up townies consistently.

5.) As much as I personally like to play Mason roles, I also concede they are very powerful. So I explicitly made sure the Masons in this game knew very well they did not have any guarantee on their partner, and further, that while they controlled the Portcullis, two scum also controlled the Drawbridge – which to the town has similar effects, that being 'nothing' (excepting for an observant town who notices the Portcullis/Axeman restriction), but still worth speculation. Nothing ended up coming of this, but it certainly had potential for a mislynch or two (or further, giving scum a very comfy – if risky – claim of also being 'masons' who control the Drawbridge).

Changes I would Make If I Were to Run This Again

1.) I wish I hadn't started with N0 – I wasn't planning on doing it originally, but Ibby thought it would help spur discussion on D1, instead of everybody mulling around talking about nothing for 10-20 pages. Naturally, the scum defied the odds and hit their spy-martyr, and followed that promptly by lynching their Lost Prince, which was an important role to keep the male hierarchy (killing side) alive.

2.) I wish I had not experimented with the "split" mafia discussion idea, but I don't think it's all

that

bad of a concept. It just turned out to be

very

hampering in this game. Or alternatively, if I was to keep the "split" discussion, I wish I had given the family as a whole the ability to have an "emergency meeting" in a secret room, such that they could all discuss between themselves for a single night before being forced back into their split communication – or to let them all talk together on N0 so they could plan a code to use for the duration of the game.

3.) At least in the context of the particular roles in this game, I did not particularly enjoy using the percentage roles – the "Kingslayer" with his 25% town kill, and the "Yellow Knight" with his 50% doctor protect. I had reasons for using the percentages, but I think there may have been more creative ways to get what I wanted whilst allowing the roles to rely on skill rather than chance.
