Freelancer takes place 800 years after a world war engulfed space civilization. The year back then was 2160. Mankind had colonized the solar system and two political entities had emerged: the Alliance consisting of American, Australian, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, British and German forces, and The Coalition of Russian, Chinese and Middle-Eastern interests. Suddenly The Coalition staged a surprise attack on Fort Kennedy, where a peace treaty turns into a bloodbath: all of the inner four planets are overrun, including Terra (Earth) herself, and the Italian and French fleets are utterly lost. The Alliance fleet regroups at Triton, Neptune's moon, and attempts to regain lost territory.In a bid to escape the civil war, the Alliance faction sent their people in stasis on an exodus from Sol. Heading towards the Sirius system, the exodites settled and transformed the surrounding space (the Sirius sector) into a region of political intrigue and opportunity.

Named after the sleeper ships they arrived in, four political houses were formed with their societies bearing distinctive marks of their ancestries: House Liberty of 1920's United States, Bretonia of Victorian era United Kingdom, Kusari of Shogunate era Japan, and Rheinland of Second Industrial Revolution Germany. Rediscovering each other after long years of rebuilding, they formed "The New Alliance". The fifth sleeper ship, Hispania, suffered a malfunction en-route and had to be abandoned in deep space. In this Age, space travel is common, and commerce between the sectors owned by each House thrives. Many factions compete to have their goals and interests given importance above those of other groups, ranging from corporate conglomerates and mining companies to law enforcement agencies and criminal gangs. In the middle of all that is where most of you stand. In order to accomplish their agendas, each faction sells contracts to mercenaries that complete missions for large rewards. Lately, however, it seems something greater has decided to interfere with the natural order of society. The toll of missing pilots is higher than ever, and these losses are affecting everyone. That's where you come in. You are the missing pilots, abducted by a mysterious group whose intentions are unknown as of yet. Most of you are simple mercenaries, but a few of you are employees of various factions. Each of you wakes up in the pilot's chair of a light fighter craft, floating in open space. As you try to jump-start the engine to get out of there, a message comes up on your viewscreen...

"Hello! As you'll notice, there is a device attached to the arm of your pilot's chair. This device is very important to your survival, so I wouldn't try to remove it. That would cause an immediate self-destruct of your spacecraft. Now that I've got your attention, let me tell you why you are here. You're going to play a little game for us. There are 27 other pilots in ships just like yours, in the same position as you. During "day phase", as we're going to call it, you and the other pilots will be charged with the duty of eliminating someone from the game. Whoever has the most votes by the end of the day phase will have their ship detonated on the spot. So it's in your best interest to not get voted, I'd say. Most of you are just mercenaries, but a few of you have been poached from a few esteemed organizations around here. Those few people will be charged with the duty of offering jobs to the rest of you each "night phase", as we'll call the second phase of the game. You may choose from any of the jobs you are offered, and then if you complete them, you will be rewarded for it. That's about all I think I need to tell you for now. Each of you will be given a codename (
your username
), and all communications will be sent using this codename. Any attempt to communicate with people outside the game, to leave your ship, or to reveal your true identity will be met with instant destruction of your ship. You will only be allowed to communicate during the day phase, and all communication will be public. No communication can be attempted during the night phase unless we tell you otherwise. Any private communication possible will be told to you at a later date. The night phase will be split into two parts. Each faction will have a time limit during which they must decide who to offer jobs to. After that, the other pilots can choose which jobs they will accept and accomplish. Once all pilots are done with their jobs, we will revert back to a new day phase, and so forth. During either of the night phase parts, you may choose to fly your ship into another of the four sectors run by each of the Houses. You will have enough time to arrive there after completing your jobs. Good luck surviving! It's time to decide your own destiny."

Rules:

1. Each "Night" phase will last 72 hours. The deadline will be posted. If you need an extension, just tell me, I might need one someday myself.

2. "Days" will last no longer than 3 weeks. If discussion lags, I will impose an earlier deadline. If discussion picks up, the deadline will be rescinded. Aren't I the nice one??? (the correct answer is... NO)

3. Votes must be in bold. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted. If you are not counted, you do not exist.

4. There is no rule 4. Muahahaha.

5. Once a player has reached the necessary majority to lynch, the day is over. Unvoting them will not save their life. At deadline, the first player to have reached at least half majority (assuming there is a tie) will constitute a lynch. Otherwise, there will be no lynch. At 4 or less players, deadline rules do not apply. Majority is needed for a lynch.

6. No lynches are allowed, they require the same votes as a lynch.

7. The game is not to be discussed outside of the thread unless your role specifically states that you may do so. You button your lip, or I button it for you.

8. Once your death scene has been posted, unless you're not dead, you’re dead. You will be told if you're not dead. Once your dead please DO NOT POST until the game is over. I will allow one "BAH!" post, as long as it contains no pertinent information.

9. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts. No matter what stupid thing you've done. Why can't you just THINK? I mean, come on!

10. Don’t quote any PMs or e-mails from me, lest I kill you.

11. If you have a night choice to make, it is due by the posted deadline. If you miss a deadline, no choice will be made. This usually involves you being very unhappy.

12. If you're going to be gone any amount of time, let everyone know.

13. The mod is god. Any mistakes such as inaccurate vote counts are obviously YOUR mistake. Please point out your mistakes so I can correct them. And if I ask you to eat play-doh, you say "WHAT COLOR, MOD!?". Sacrifices of small woodland animals accepted.

If there are any factions that can talk at night, they are also allowed to talk during the pre-game, but that must end once Day 1 begins.

Trapped in the cockpits of their ships, the pilots discuss who needs to go first. After a long, heated discussion, they are reminded that time is running out. They press their buttons, and finally one of the ships explode. A voice comes up to announce the death.

"So you finally made a decision, eh? Let's see who it was...ah yes, Iron Man. Poor guy. He's dead now. Wanna know who he was? Just a lowly Freelancer. That's one down. Alright everyone, it's night now. Time to go to work!"

It is now Night 1, Phase 1. Each faction will receive details of the jobs they can offer, and they will have 72 hours to make a decision. After that, Phase 2 will begin. At any time during Night 1, you can pm me your choice to travel from one sector to another. However, this will not happen until AFTER Phase 2 has finished. Pilots in Liberty can travel to any other sector. However, pilots in the other sectors must travel to Liberty first if they wish to go to any other sector. Please send me your choices in a timely manner.

Totally non-related comment, but I've actually worked for the Xenos in that game before. They have a base, I think, in the Texas system (the mostly empty system between Liberty and Rheinland, the one that does NOT have the Zoner base in it), and if you stick by the jump-gate and ambush all of ships that come through it, you'll eventually make them like you and all the police/navy/shipping/etc will attack you on sight. But you can dock at the Xenos base and talk to them, sell them stuff, etc. It's pretty awesome.

I am searching for a replacement for Xtoxm. It seems that it would be better for all involved if he were replaced at this point, and he has requested this as well. I prefer not to replace players because they get pissed off at the game (goodness knows, it's happened to me a lot, so I know how it feels), but if they request it personally, I will oblige.

Sorry, guys. I won't comment on whether I *did* send him any pms earlier, but I will confirm that he did not receive the original role pm that I sent Xtoxm. Somehow I wrote it up and tried to send it but failed, perhaps getting distracted before I had actually sent the pm. Either way, that's not important. I have been away from internet access for several days (I was actually in Grant Park in Chicago on Friday, but *NOT* for Lollapalooza), so I didn't get any pms. For future reference, it would be preferable to straighten problems like this out by pm before posting anything in-game about it. Thank you.

I would like to weigh in on the Scattered argument, since it stemmed from my own actions. I would like to clarify that my organization for the game is split up into several notepad files, and even role pms are not necessarily located all in one place. I did in fact send Scattered part of the information he was supposed to receive without sending all of it. Whether it was part of his role pm or other information his predecessor knew about, I will not comment on that. I apologize for the mistake. This game is quite complicated, so it is hard for me to keep everything straight sometimes. I hope that my mistakes will only have minor effect, if any, and I will strive to do the best I can in making sure that the game runs smoothly in the future.

Two more piles of rubble have joined the space junk in the Sirius Sector. Among them are the remains of pilots named Flameaxe and Gorrad. Upon inspection, it is noted that they both seem to be wearing the same logo on their flight suits...that of Daumann Construction. It seems someone really has it out for that faction. It's up to the rest of you to find them.

As you all decide to kill Korlash, he launches his makeshift escape pod just in time to avoid the blast. Unfortunately, he had unwittingly drifted into Liberty space over the course of the day, and his escape pod headed straight into the gigantic Liberty minefield. Korlash was never heard from again. Another message flashes on the screens of the remaining pilots:

It is now Night 6.

It seems that Korlash's accidental drift into Liberty space was not the only instance today. Battle Mage has somehow drifted to Rheinland space, and Kusari fleets have massed at their borders to keep out all traffic. Something fishy is going on in that sector, but we have other problems at the moment. Kusari space is
off-limits

Somewhere near the border of Rheinland and Liberty space, a strange object floats out of the Liberty minefield. farside22 flies over to check it out, noticing the blast-worn "Escape" markings too late. Some strange beam flies out from the pod, immobilizing farside's ship. As the pod floats closer, farside22 looks out with fear as he sees an alien face looking back at him, but one that looks vaguely familiar. It isn't until the boarding hatch of his ship opens of its own accord and the being enters that farside22 realizes where the familiarity came from. It's
Korlash
...farside22 screams and reaches for his blaster, but it's far too late. Korlash grabs him and slings him out into space, using the tractor beam to sling the body towards the minefield, where it is quickly lost in explosions. Korlash seats himself in the pilots chair and smiles. "I have returned..."

Korlash replaces farside22.

As day comes to a close, Cavebear with a toothache and armlx look down at their navigation systems and realize they have drifted off-course during the day. Cavebear seems to have drifted straight through the jump-gate into the California system, and is now located in
Liberty
. armlx was so engrossed in the day's heated arguments that he didn't notice his ship being drawn into jumpholes from the Cambridge system through several Omega systems, finally ending up in Dresden, within
Rheinland
. Upon trying to correct their courses, both pilots find battleships lined up on the border of Bretonia. A message pops up on their screens. "Oh ho ho, it seems we've pissed off the Bretonians. They don't appreciate us conducting our little...game...within their borders. Oh well, Liberty and Rheinland still haven't caught on, that's plenty of space for you remaining pilots to spread out. Just remember, don't try to go back to Bretonia or Kusari, or you'll die. They aren't letting anyone in or out right now."

As day starts, outrage over Battle Mage's death sweeps through the pilots. Since most of them were working for him, they instantly knew who was likely responsible. Several of them simultaneously select armlx from the list of pilots, and before he knew what had happened, he could feel his cockpit breaking down around him. He quickly hit the eject button, but nothing happened. Frantic, he jammed the button down again, only to have it begin to eject just as the explosion reached him. armlx was consumed in the fire and is no more.

armlx, Corsairs Leader, lynched Day 9


A message pops up on the screens of the remaining pilots. "Congratulations! The last "criminal" pilot has been eliminated. It seems people prefer working for legitimate business after all. And so the experiment ends. However, not all of you have succeeded at your mission. Sorry, Korlash, I don't think being alone in your faction constitutes 25% of the remaining 6 pilots. Goodbye."

With that, the other pilots see Korlash's location indicator wink out on their screens. The messages return.

"The rest of you, however, all work for Bretonia Mining & Manufacturing now. They seem to be pretty popular around here. Not only have you eliminated all the criminal factions, you also control enough of the pilot population to have succeeded. As such, you have earned your lives back. You are free to go."

The message winks out, and the pilots look around, wondering what will happen next. Suddenly, they are all ejected from their spacecraft, and the ships disintegrate in flames around them. Fortunately, they are all picked up by rescue craft from Rheinland and Liberty government agencies, although no one believes their story. After some research though, they find out that an alien race has been possessing notable figures in each Sector, trying to take over the governments. Bretonia and Kusari space is now closed, as each Sector has been taken over and its government in exile tries to fight the alien presence. You think you were involved in an experiment on human nature, something to help the aliens successfully emulate the beings they possess.

Congratulations! The Bretonia Mining & Manufacturing faction (Leaders: Battle Mage and Cavebear with a Toothache; Recruits: Cephrir, springlullaby, mneme II, and ZONEACE II) has completed its full win condition and won the game![.i]

Unless you manage to join a faction, you can only win if all criminal organizations are eliminated.

Mod Notes:


Jobs are given in the format of "Please kill someone tonight", although they will be written in full flavor form.

Factions are informed of who completed a mission for them each night. Failing to get a result after accepting a mission (be it do to roleblock or whatnot) counts as failing the mission. Factions will be allowed to reoffer jobs that were not completed, and they can choose new targets and new employees to do the jobs.

If all Factions are eliminated at the same time (ie no faction has the chance to be alive to complete their win condition), everyone loses except for the remaining freelancers, because the Nomads claim victory.

Each sector will have 8 jobs available each night, one from each faction + a default job that will give 1/4 of the people that accept it a double vote the next day. If a Freelancer completes a job successfully, they move one step closer to joining that faction. If they complete 3 jobs for the same faction (2 for criminal factions), they will join that faction permanently.

People who are fully aligned with a faction do not receive any jobs, but they can be offered jobs. They just won't ever be notified, and the job will be reported as rejected, just like any other rejected job. Corsairs and Outcasts can receive jobs if they are not performing a kill.

After Night 5, the factions have a pool of their rejected jobs up to that point to offer each night.

Corsairs and Outcasts all get a one-shot immunity to investigation.

I think in retrospect the criminal factions were underpowered. I hadn't expected the Kishiro/Samura situation to implode Day 1 and end up with 2 killing factions eliminated right away, so that made it harder for the scum, as there were only 1-2 kills a night instead of 3 or 4. If I ran this again, I might consider allowing criminal factions to recruit after only 1 accepted mission, instead of having to wait for 3 like the other factions. I might also make the criminal factions have 3 members to start with instead of 2. I'm also unconvinced that it was the correct decision to make the Freelancer Win Condition be to eliminate criminals instead of making them essentially survivors. I think that turned people off of accepting jobs from criminal factions, which made it impossible for them to recruit anyone. I also didn't like having to make the Liberty Navy win condition simply to eliminate criminals, but I couldn't think of a secondary condition to add to their WC. In the long run, though, I'm satisfied with how this game turned out, other than it taking a long time mostly due to my own time constraints making nights take forever. I think this game could be a really good mafia variation with tweaking and a more dedicated time situation from the mod.

Eh, by the time I said that, the Freelancer WC had been stated in the thread so many times it didn't matter, and I didn't feel like actually sending it to everyone. I just said that to keep the game from being broken by a really stupid metagame.

I think they were too. I was kinda expecting the criminal factions to recruit faster than the town ones, though I do think that 1 mission is too much. If one were doing a closed setup, 2 might be right, (and give the criminals cookies to bribe people with--"if you succed, you'll be immune to one lynch/one kill/get a gun (oneshot kill), etc; that way, there's more of a reason for people to take "hey, dude wanna kill someone for the crims?" recruits. For an open setup, a fixed number offers too much gaming the system (though the criminals could have a "strongarm" job that recruited someone who was at n-1 jobs), but you could have each job have a percentage of recruiting that averaged to people being recruited on a certain day -- if you want people recruited into the criminals on day 2, have, say, a 30% chance of recruit each night people accept a job from them. For a 3 day recruit (on average), you want 20% per night.
Yea, if I ever run it again, something like that might happen.

Could have been worse. If only one of Kishiro/Samura had been killed off, we'd have had another protown faction helping out.
Vigs are double-edged swords, and the surviving faction would not have known the other faction was killed off, so they would have still been hunting for their opponents.

I agree. I started out in the survivor mindset, which vanished as I reread my description and I realized I was essentially a recruitable townie.

If freelancers have an easy win condition to start with (eg, kill scum), they're not going to jeapordize this by becoming scum, with a much harder condition (taking 'protown' jobs, sure, it makes their base condition easier, mostly).

There -is- the issue that the starting freelancers don't have much of an incentive to -do- much of anything; why should they scumhunt when they can win just as easily as scum as town? Goal: "Be alive (or recruited into a group with easier conditions) at endgame" might help this, though.
Yea, that might work. There are still issues with freelancers voting just about anyone because they are purely self-interested, though. However, it makes it easier for the scum to hide, which could be interesting.

I don't have a problem with it; it's kinda nice to have a universally good group in the game. That said, I could see making LN special by not letting them recruit (so LN jobs help the town but don't grow the faction) or something.
