Mafia 70: Traditional - Game over!

Hi. This is a large normal game of mafia. Which means that... we're in a town. A fairly large town as it happens, with 22 inhabitants. There was a day when you all lived peacefully and in safety. All going about your daily routine without fear of being randomly shot in the back of the head, or quietly knifed in a side alley. A little boring to some, but I think you'd find most would choose it over what we have now...

Bad people came. Like, really bad. Evil. Murderers. The death rate has shot up, and nobody can sleep soundly in their beds anymore, for fear of not waking up the following day. What's really unsettling, is that these people seem to possess skeleton keys, the ones that can open any lock. Including the ones on your front door. Worst of all, the killers are dressed up as ordinary townsfolk!

The reason this game exists at all ladies and gentlemen, is that you've decided you won't tolerate it any longer. Oh no. You've gathered the population of the entire town in the town square, with the cunning plan of stringing someone up every day. The objective, of course, being to kill all the killers, informally known as scum, before they can kill all of you. Can it be done? Time will tell.

Rules

1.) This game is a day start. The game will start when everyone has confirmed via PM.
2.) During the day you can vote for a player that you think should be lynched. Votes must be in the form

otherwise they won't be counted. It would be helpful if players unvote when switching their votes.
3.) When a player reaches a majority of votes, they are lynched. I will reveal their role, and the game will move into night. Players can still talk during twilight.
4.) If discussion is lagging or the day is dragging, I may set a deadline. It takes fewer votes than a majority to deadline lynch a player.
5.) No talking to other players, dead or alive, outside of the thread, unless your role permits it.
6.) Once dead, you stop posting. A bah post is fine though.
7.) If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
8.) Try to post at least once every 48 hours. Treat the game as a committment. If you go inactive, you will be replaced.
9.) I'll try to post votecounts as often as possible. Feel free to ask for a votecount at any time. Disappointingly, I may make mistakes. Point them out very gently.
10.) Avoid excessive profanity, flaming etc.
11.) Do not quote or fakequote your role PM. This is a modkillable offence.
12.) Have fun!

I won't be replacing either Lemming or Zoneace at this point. But since my simple quoting of rule 10 didn't seem to do much, let me make it clearer.

The point of the game is to play mafia, not to trade insults or fill up page after page with flame wars. It annoys everyone, including me, and makes the game less enjoyable, and less appealing for potential replacements. It's sad that I should even have to post this kind of warning. So, please stop doing it. Anyone who feels they won't be capable of that can ask me to replace them. If I get a handful of people complaining to me about one person in particular, I'll replace them. I don't want to, because finding replacements is a hassle, but it's not an idle threat.

You all watch him dying, a fitting punishment for a dirty scumbag. Rawr. Unfortunately, Zeppo wasn't a dirty scumbag, just a townsperson, which is very sad. A search of his possessions reveals nothing particularly interesting, so you conclude he was of the vanilla variety, of the type who's Role PM can be found on the front page. You all resolve to do better tomorrow, and head off in your seperate directions, wondering whether you'll make it out alive tomorrow morning.

It is night 1. There is a 72 hour deadline, non extendable.

Day 2 dawns. You all gather in the town square to perform the traditional headcount. It seems that only nineteen of you have made it. White and Flameaxe are not with us.

It turns out that both of them were shot last night. White's death is the more gruesome; he is found dead in his back yard, shot in the chest at point blank range, his guts having been opened to the air. Flameaxe didn't make it home at all, and is found on the corner of the street where he lived, in a pool of his own blood. White apparently had nothing to hide, while a search of Flameaxe's possessions suggests he was a member of the masonic society. In the absence of any incriminating evidence, you decide that he was also innocent, and had nothing to do with any killings. After burying your dead friends, and a few minutes respectful silence, you all convene once again, to try and bring the murderers to justice.

The town is much more decisive today. Who needs to spend the whole day talking? Might as well lynch quickly then go and sunbathe. You all string up Toaster Goofball, and find yourselves in a kind of good news/good news situation. The good news is that she most definitely wasn't a cop. The other good news is that she wasn't just some lowlife scumbag either. She was in fact a very important scumbag. The leader, in fact, the founder, of the mafia. It is now night 2. The deadline is 72 hours.

Day 3. Once again, two people are missing from the meeting in the town square.

The Fonz is found dead, not at his home, but out in the street, where any good tracker belongs. He was every inch the professional, his clothes the right colour to blend in, his shoes the kind that don't make a sound. Yet he had no chance to hide from his assailant, and his body is peppered with bullets from a submachine gun. His alleigance, as you've probably guessed, was to the town. You move on to find that Setael has also been shot, in the comfort of her own home. Some amongst you found Setael shifty, but despite the rumours, you can find nothing whatsoever to suggest that she had ulterior motives either, unless the mafia have been using tubs of vanilla ice cream to kill their victims (which they haven't). Setael was just a vanilla townie. With the formalities over, the sixteen of you left decide to get back to democratic killing, considering how well it worked yesterday.

About half an hour before the sun goes down completely, you manage to come to a majority decision to lynch Yamahako. Yama finds himself in a fight for his life against nine angry people, and not suprisingly, he comes off second best. When his body hangs limply from the rope, you all search his property, looking for that incriminating evidence that will tell you that he was dirty. Unfortunately, you come up dry, as it turns out that Yamahako was as vanilla as they come, with not so much as an unpaid parking ticket to his name.

Sadly, even his skills couldn't save him from a bullet to the brain, in fact, it's likely he was dead before hitting the ground. There are tears at his funeral, but you all suspect that some among you are just faking. It's not difficult to fake tears if you know how. Anyway, the rest of you will just have to continue as best you can, without Dr Erg0's help.

After a heated day of debating, the town decides that the one called Battle Mage is the most likely to be scum. He is brutally lynched by 8 people, and when he's dead, you all do a thorough investigation into the life of this dead man. The findings are interesting. Battle Mage was not a vanilla townie, but the owner of most of the brothels in the town. Using his, er, business, he was able to arrange for someone to be roleblocked each night. But, there's no rule saying roleblockers have to be protown is there? Battle Mage had clear links to the mafia, and his lynching means that most of you can feel a little safer at night. Rejoice fair town!

It is night 4. I'm going to deadline this one at 68 hours, this is because I'll have a 3 day period almost certainly without access soon, and if I deadlined at 72 hours I'd likely not be able to open the thread before leaving. Send nightchoices!

Day 5 dawns for you to find that two more people have been bumped off during the night. The first one was Skruffs, who was known as an incredibly legitimate guy in the town. Killing a law enforcement officer is normally frowned upon, but we can safely say that whoever did it on this occasion didn't care. The second victim was KaleiÐoscøpe, who was shot through the back of the head in the small hours of the morning. He was generally a fairly passive type, but known for bouts of aggression at times. It seems that these traits, however, don't make a scumbag, and that KaleiÐoscøpe was aligned with the town. Naturally, his insight will be sorely missed.

As the rest of you are getting ready to gather in the town square, it dawns on you that there are 11 dead players, and 11 players currently alive. This means that all of you guys now have survived into the last 50%. Of course, this being a game of mafia, not survivor, this means nothing at all, but I like thinking of the idea that people worldwide will be wasting their time by reading this paragraph that I've typed out on the subject. Anyway, you all gather in the usual place, and begin the day 5 deliberations.

And so you're all sitting around on deck chairs in the town square. Korejora is drinking peach juice, Setael is drinking an unspecified non alcoholic substance. Ether is drinking fresca with a straw. And Bookitty has had a hot chocolate to help with her cold. As it gets near the end of the day, you realise that someone has to be lynched, even if everyone seems so nice. Despite the indecision, you finally scrape together enough votes to lynch JDodge under the town rules. JDodge is given only a few minutes to write his will, before he's hanged in the town square for crimes against the town. Unfortunately, it turns out that JDodge was part of the town, and that he didn't even leave the house at night, let alone kill people. Hopefully you guys can avenge him tomorrow, but first, there's a night to get through.

Day 6 dawns, and you all meet in the usual place, wondering who's been pwned during the night. Setael is looking rather green, poor thing; just what

was

that non alcoholic substance she was drinking yesterday? However, she's undeniably in better shape than the two dead bodies you're about to discover this morning.

First up is Sir Tornado, who is found dead in the street, shot neatly in the side of the head with a sniper rifle. Sir Tornado was the self confessed killer of several members of the town, but insisted he was doing it on the side of good. A brief search of his corpse reveals a rather old handgun, which noticeably has been fired. You then notice the body of Elmo, just ten yards away, the final target of your now dead Vigilante. Interestingly Elmo was wearing body armour, which didn't save him because he was shot in the back of the head. A look into his life turns out to be the most interesting yet.

Elmo didn't own a gun, but it's rather difficult to work out what exactly he did for a living, and whether or not he left the house at night. A look around his home suggests he was a mafia sympathiser, in fact, he had something of a mafia fettish. His bedroom has pictures of the founder of the mafia on the wall, but there isn't even the slightest hint of the identity of any other members of the organisation. What is clear, however, is that he was rather keen on the idea of the mafia taking over the town...

Even despite the fact that I seem to say this most days... it's been a loooong day. Four votes suffices to put an end to Setael's second life in this town, and many of you are hopeful that she's scum this time. Also, the pattern has been to consistently lynch townies on odd numbered days, and scum on even numbered days, so today looks promising. With Setael dead, you can all break into her house to see what she was hiding there. It's clear that her vanilla ice cream fettish had gotten totally out of control, with tubs of the stuff as far as the eye can see, but as mentioned several days ago, vanilla ice cream isn't used by the mafia for killing people. Setael joins the increasingly large pile of honest citizens who have been wrongly accused and put to death by the lynch mob; things don't look too good as you all turn in for the night.

It turns out that she's been murdered in her own home, her body dented by a whole magazine of bullets (a waste of money when one would have done the job). Her house contained many library books, and many pet kittens, as well as a membership card to the town's masonry, but nothing sinister that might suggest any wrongdoing or mafia connections on her part. You all bury your dearest friend Bookitty, before convening in the town square, under more pressure than ever to reduce the scum presence in your little town.

After alot of quiet and thoughtful deliberation, you come to a majority decision to lynch Niv. He's a member of the town masonry, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's loyal to the town does it? She was an innocent townsperson, shot in the head on her way home, barely a hundred yards from the town square. Unfortunately for you guys of the town, your numbers have dwindled to the point where the mafia no longer have to hide. MoS and Simenon both draw their guns, and make short work of Ether and ZONEACE, leaving them in control of what is a now a completely deserted town. God knows what they plan to do with it, but that's outside the scope of this game.

Regarding the setup: As can be seen from role PMs, the mafia mason was a fullscum mason, which I know a few people seemed to think was impossible. I included the masonry to see how the masons would handle it, to see how much or how little nightalking would be used, and to see some speculation about what the untrustworthy mason was (although, for some reason it never occurred to me that people would think miller). I also wondered whether the town would follow a strategy of killing off masons as quickly as possible, or killing off non masons as quickly as possible. I don't think the addition of the masonry changed balanced that much; I think 4 vanilla townies and 1 mafia goon instead wouldn't have hurt the town too much. Simenon had a copy of the town mason PM, and I have to say early on, when Niv attacked Sim, I didn't have a clue what was happening. I read over that argument several times, and still couldn't figure it out.

Early on I was worried because I thought scum were screwed. Simenon under early mason pressure, both Zorg and TS acting scummy, and MoS hated by the cop. Only the traitor was flying under the radar, and he couldn't win by himself. If Zorg had been lynched day 1 instead of Zeppo, this game could have been very different, not least because the cop would have had several useful investigations.

On day 4 I was worried because I thought the town was getting wiped out completely. It seemed like one of Bookitty or Setael was getting lynched, and probably the other one the next day, and in general there just seemed to be alot of fairly easy targets for scum. I was sort of relieved when people started going after Battle Mage. I think the town definitely had a chance after that, but the game was mostly lost on days 6 and 7 by the apathetic town play. Not much I can add to that; the game definitely started dragging, and was clearly becoming a chore for everybody, and those conditions aren't exactly ripe for finding scum.

I thought the mafia didn't function very well as a unit, especially on day 1, and because they missed half of their bookie nightchoices, as well as failing to make the obvious bookie choice on night 1 (TS). On day 4 I predicted MoS and Simenon would win it for scum though, so well done to them. Elmo the traitor seemed very good at figuring out his scumbuddies in this game, as can be seen from his investigations, and he also left MoS a breadcrumb when he said, "I wouldn't take a bet on MoS". I couldn't work out whether MoS had seen this or not.

It's a shame the game ended up slow and anticlimatic, but I still hope people enjoyed it before days 6/7, and thanks everyone who helped me out by replacing into this game.

The roleblocker is probably a more useful all round role, and in this game it meant the cop was disabled the minute he claimed. The bookie becomes more useful later on, when it becomes easier to guess the lynches, and it can mean the town is in lylo earlier than they expect it. The mafia could also bet on one of their number to be lynched, which meant that technically, no lynching on day 7 would have been a bad option for the town (because with 3 town v 2 mafia, the scum can bet on one of their own to be lynched and simply have them commit suicide for the win).

The masonry existed for the reasons I gave in 2895. They weren't really meant to be poweroles as such but I thought it would add something to the gameplay. In hindsight, making the dirty mason a traitor might have worked better, possibly combined with giving the mafia a hint that their ally was found in the masonry.
