• Rules (you should probably read these)

1. Assuming you don't lynch anyone, a day phase should last two weeks. When the two weeks are up, the game will enter a deadline. In every 24-hour block after the deadline, a majority of the living players must post or the game will go to night. Basically, lynch quickly or keep things active.
   
2. If the game goes to night due to a deadline, there won't be a lynch. Someone has to consciously place a hammer.
   
3. You may choose to go to night without a lynch before then, by having half of the players
   vote: No Lynch
   .
   
4. Night deadlines are "whenever I next get online 48 hours after [the lynch scene/finding any necessary replacements]." If I'm missing your choice and you're on AIM, I'll contact you and give you a minute to think of something. Otherwise, you'll just miss your choice. I will not announce day sooner, even if all choices are in.
   
5. Scum may both daytalk and nighttalk privately amongst themselves.
   Other players may not. Not even with dead players. Not even
   between
   two dead players, unless they receive clearance from me first. Players may ask nonplaying rantbuddies nicely if they would ever replace into this game and, if they say that they won't, proceed to rant. Rantbuddies should not be doing your scumhunting or passing messages along. I am of course available, sympathetic and discreet.
   So is Patrick, who reviewed the setup.
   
   
6. 'Dead' means 'dead.' Don't post a "Bah," don't AIM the guy who hammered you to tell him what a scumbag he is, and definitely don't keep making game-relevant posts. Just lie there...and think dead thoughts.
   
7. Votes should be in the format '
   vote: Glorcthulu
   .' If they are not bold, they won't count. I will register misspellings and nicknames if I can figure out who you're referring to. You do not have to
   unvote
   , but you're welcome to do so anyway.
   
8. Do try to be active, and leave a notification in-thread, on V/LA and/or by PM if that's not possible. Living players may publically or privately request a prod for a player who hasn't posted in at least 48 hours. I will automatically send one out to anyone who hasn't posted in a week. (In Elmo's case, I will automatically send one out to him just whenever.) If asked, I will disclose the status of any prod.
   
9. I will seek a replacement for anyone who has not picked up a prod for 72 hours (unless it's known to be on vacation) or has requested replacement. If you have been prodded more than twice in the same day phase, I will confront you about this. (In Elmo's case, I will confront him just whenever.)
   
10. When a player has the majority of the votes at a single point, it is dead (unless it isn't) and the game goes to twilight. No one may post in twilight.
    
11. I'll try to post one votecount per page. If I miss a page, I'll edit a votecount into the top of the page. Every page will have a votecount somewhere. If I make mistakes in my votecount, it is your right to verbally abuse me. "Point them out gently" my ass.
    
12. The out-of-character and
    tags are for mod usage only.

You have a horrible, scary night. If you get any sleep at all, it involves nightmares of being torn apart by werewolves, with only a fancy Ellipsese graphing calculator to defend yourself. Finally, you get out of the house, into the safety of the majority.

You see someone else--Rotten Snitch--tap a large man he probably doesn't know very well on the shoulder and whisper, "Watch my back."

Appalled by the ignorance, Skruffs jumps in at this point. "You know, the werewolves! They killed the mayor!"

Rotten Snitch stares at him. "Wait, they killed the mayor?!"

Skruffs shrugs. "Missing. But there was that girl who was running around shouting about werewolves earlier. She's also not here. Maybe they killed

her.

"No, the shipments of Seizure Party 6 just came in."

"Oh." Skruffs considers this for a few minutes. "So...nobody's actually dead."

"Strappado is dead."

Rotten Snitch glares at the laughing NPC who's supposed to be protecting him. "Look, maybe she was kind of feral, and maybe she did sleep on my doorstep a few times, but she meant well. She left me a squirrel once. And she had a steady day job as an insurance agent--it'd be stupid to sell everyone insurance and

then

kill them."

"I'm out of here," the NPC says. In fact, it turns out that very few people are interested in saving Caret. And there are others like JDodge who would have helped, but got wrapped up in the Seizure Party surplus instead. Soon, there are only eleven of you crazies left standing in your little lynchcrowd.

Zindaras shrugs and hands him the chalk. Skruffs reaches to move Andycyca's name back onto Unvote. But then he hesitates. "The chalkboard's broken."

Zindaras rolls his eyes.

"Did you break it, Zindie? I hear werewolves

hate

chalkboards. They can hear things in higher frequencies, so the sound is especially painful to them. Or something."

"No."

You all resolve to hurry up so you can borrow Mizzy's slide projector tomorrow. Werewolves have not been known to sabotage those.

Andycyca, who has been faithfully updating the tree bark ever since Elmo broke a nail, finally breaks a nail. He mumbles a "meh, screw it," under his breath. Then he nonchalantly walks up to Capricious and pushes. Capricious falls over without a word.

Everyone stares at Andycyca in silence for a few minutes. He looks back at them. Capricious looks into space, with creepy dead eyes. His neck has been broken.

Elmo quietly goes through Capricious's wallet. There's a bit of money and a library card--that's it. You know that other towns sometimes have mafia problems, and mafiates can be identified by their standard concealable water guns. But how do you recognize an enemy that uses its own body to kill?

At this point, the moon conveniently rises. Capricious's body doesn't change at all. You scatter before the real werewolves can change, 'cause then they'd probably eat you.

You all meet in an alley the next morning. Well, not all of you. When Eldarad asks about Sir Tornado, Yosarian says he's stuck on Level 19. When Eldarad asks about Elmo, Yosarian claims not to know. So you go to his house.

The lights are on. The window to the living room is open; you peer in to see Elmo on a chair. There's a girl standing over him; you recognize her as Ether, the covergirl for

Janitors Monthly.

She is poking Elmo with a stick and sobbing.

"Post, dammit!

Why won't he post?!

Zindaras whistles, and she looks up. Her prodstick brushes Elmo's body, which falls over. There is a ghastly expression on his face, or at least, most of it.

"He won't post because he's

dead,

" she whispers, just loudly enough for you to hear. "I know that. And he was a villager. Now please leave me alone."

Neither do Eldarad or Yosarian. You're about to call off your lynching strategy and start searching when someone taps Y on the shoulder. With the marker.

"Hi. I'm Patrick, your friendly backup mod. I see Ether's left on holiday, so I'm taking over for a bit."

"Okay. Hand over the marker."

"No, that's okay," Patrick says. "You don't have to make an effort to accommodate for me. I'll be just as useful as Ether."

" Without waiting for a reply, Patrick writes Y's vote onto the projector paper, in a very neat cursive--he even smudges Y's name off of the "Unvote" count and replaces Zindaras's name so there isn't a space. And he dots the I in Zindaras's name. No, seriously. Just as he's adding the last parenthesis, he realizes that everyone is staring at him. "What does Ether normally do, anyway?"

"I think she's at a bar."

"Oh god." Patrick contemplates this illegal and ethically questionable modding practice for a few minutes. "So...you wouldn't mind wrapping this up so

can leave early, would you?"

"Nah."

Then all three look at the slide projector, and look at the space where Patrick was previously standing. The votecount is accurate, aside from the lack of Gabriel. But Patrick isn't there.

A frigid evening wind whistles past you; an owl screeches at the moon. Your marker is on the pavement. Its cap is a few feet away. Still no Patrick--what's that liquid near the slide projector? It's too dark to make out the color. There's a low growling noise.

You get out of there. Really, really fast.

No one has been lynched. It is now Night 3. Please send choices by 11:00 pm Eastern on Monday, May 5.

Hasdgfas steps into the sunlight first. The slide projector is exactly where it was last night, and only its votecount has been mysteeeeeeeriously reset. Neither the marker, nor its cap, nor what might or might not be Patrick's blood have moved from their places, either.

Hasdgfas puts a finger into the possibly-blood, and shoots a glance back at a second person, still hiding behind a tree. She nods; he grimaces and samples it. "Grape juice," he declares. "Half-evaporated grape juice. Thanks, Mizzy.

"Yeah, I think the coast is clear."

Mizzy, Skruffs, Yosarian, Eldarad, Zindaras, Andycyca, Y and Rotten Snitch all skip out of their various hiding places, startling the hell out of each other. But once you've calmed down, it's clear that you're all still alive.

"Come and get me," Rotten Snitch whispers, as Andycyca pushes through the crowd. (This is done gently--it turns out Andycyca can push people with a variety of perfectly controlled results.) Just as he's about to deliver the final blow, Eldarad perks his ear.

"He's...ticking."

Andycyca considers this. "

you ticking?"

"It's my watch," Rotten Snitch says.

"Ooh. Is this one of those $300,000 watches made from bits of the Titanic that only tells you if it's day? Fashionable werewolves would find that very convenient."

"It's actually a $500,000 watch that only makes a realistic ticking noise. It's made from bits of Noah's Ark. I don't find it convenient at all."

Andycyca promptly snaps his neck.

"Stupid salesman told me mine was unique," he grumbles as Skruffs goes through Rotten Snitch's pockets. But there's nothing of interest--just that ticking, ticking watch. Andycyca makes a point of stepping on it as you head for your homes.

When you return to the alley the next day, a young man is already waiting there. A cop--maybe a little naïve, but he is here for a reason. He thoroughly looks over each of you, and doesn't open his mouth until at least thirty seconds later.

"This is a crime scene, you know. We found a man with his neck snapped and his pockets looted last night."

Skruffs beams--as we've already established, it's not that easy to identify someone as a werewolf in broad daylight, so good call on Rotten Snitch back there. The rest of you, of course, have moral standards and feel sort of awkward.

"You can't arrest us. We're stopping the werewolves," Andycyca points out. "The mayor said there's a law somewhere that sanctions this."

At the mention of the mayor--still missing, apparently--the cop looks away sadly. Y gives him a big hug and says, "I'm sorry. Should we go somewhere else?"

"Meh. You're right, I can't arrest you, but please wait here. We'll send a psychology squad over when we're not so tied up with Seizure Party Syndrome.

My god, it's worse than Tetris.

" He frees himself from Y, then adds, "On second thoughts, just hear me out.

"You're all crazy. Eight of you lynched Mr. Snitch; eight of you are here today. None of you are dead. And I know the same thing happened last night." (Strappado and Elmo flash through your minds, but you don't feel like correcting him.) "Maybe the werewolves are, like, happy with killing the mayor, or something. Maybe the mayor ran off to stop terrorism without telling us first again. I don't know. I wish you wouldn't scare people like this over the festival, is all.

"Okay, you can go now."

But of course...you can't.

Many animals--songbirds, werewolves--communicate to large areas with their unique sounds. You don't really think of kittens as one of these animals, but the yowling sound you all hear is distinctly feline, and is distinctly some kind of signal. Zindaras mumbles, "Excuse me, I have to take this."

He walks down the street, to a bench where a man is sitting.

"Guardian. Your avatar looks...different."

"Don't remind me. I've just been put through three weeks of Felinus Maximus's twisted indoctrination, and now it's your turn. DrippingGoofball is going to have a field day with you, do you hear me? The Nibbler cult will rise again, and you'll be our head recruiter."

Zindaras shudders, and Guardian makes a satisfied purring noise before catching himself. "The next ship to Macron will get to the dock in two hours. It's called the Deathmask Nibbler. Here's a ticket. Don't miss it or our agents will track you down."

"But what about saving Caret?" Zindaras tries.

"Oh,

I'll

Guardian replaces Zindaras.

Guardian introduces himself to the rest of you, makes a few accusations, you know. Just as he's settled in, a voice yowls, "WAIT!" Zindaras, the

catboy runs up to Guardian and hands him a headband with cat ears. "You forgot these--they're standard issue. Put them on."

Guardian throws an embarrassed smile in your direction and puts the headband on. Zindaras hisses, "Really, if I didn't believe in Felinus Maximus's abilities and awesome charisma, I'd think you weren't a kultist at all. Let's see, try chasing this flashlight." Guardian bats at it; he seems perfectly enthusiastic to you human and werewolf onlookers, but Zindaras just gives him a pained look.

"Didn't you have a boat to catch?" Guardian asks.

"Eh, I hate water, and anyway, I'm sure I've missed it by now."

"I don't care, and no, it hasn't left yet. And I wasn't bluffing about the agents in Caret. We have plenty: Skruffs,

Guardian looks at each of their heads in turn, but the crown, cowboy hat and Carmen Miranda hat are gone.

Zindaras says, "

"Now they've done it," Skruffs says, glancing in Guardian's direction. "As if werewolves weren't enough, we've got Nibblonians after us. And you know what they do to defectors."

Skruffs and Hasdgfas huddle together and sort of drag Andycyca in. They all stare at Guardian until it starts to get disturbing.

"Look, you

Hasdgfas and Skruffs keep staring and clutching at Andycyca (who's looking at Zindaras instead). Zindaras tries, "They'll probably be around the dock, at least until the boat leaves. I don't remember when that is, but I'm pretty sure we have a bit of time still. Let's hurry up with lynching someone and then you can all hide, okay?"

Andycyca takes a look at the rest of you and shouts, "Wait!

"Please give my friends their sweatpants back. I'll go home and give you some of mine. They're much nicer anyway. Just wait here."

TheSweatpantsNinja shrugs and jumps down again. The sack of sweatpants is still in the tree, where none of you can reach it. You're not as confident as Andycyca is that he'll be giving those back, but you can only hope.

Nobody snaps necks like Andycyca did. Mizzy looks around, but she's on her own with the finishing blow. TheSweatpantsNinja offers her a pair of his class-A garotting sweatpants, but no one except he and Skruffs have any idea how to utilize this gimmick. Eventually, Mizzy picks up a rock that looks sort of sharp and steps forward uncertainly.

Eldarad glares at her with an edge that accountants

really really shouldn't have.

Mizzy hesitates, but then catches herself and starts walking faster. Eldarad continues to glare, and then he gives a little snarl under his breath. In certain circles, that snarl would be menacing and authoritative.

In

this

circle, it just makes the whole wagon spring to action.

Hasdgfas and Yosarian each go for one of Eldarad's arms. Guardian watches Zindaras's uniquely graceful attacks, and when the elder feline roars a battlecry, he bounds in and starts delivering swipes of his own. TheSweatpantsNinja gives Eldarad a horrible wedgie, which is even worse because of the tail that's starting to poke out.

Then Mizzy jabs the rock into his throat and he dies slowly and horribly. You all stand back a bit, and Zindaras licks his injuries. Yosarian goes through Eldarad's wallet and comes up with some toothpicks. Good job.

eight

of you return to the alley the next day. TheSweatpantsNinja, being the newest, is still keeping track, and makes a confused headcount. There is no one unfamiliar, or undead.

Then Andycyca taps him on the shoulder and says, "My sweatpants drawer has been physically removed, thrown out the window and dragged away. What the hell?" He then walks away. So that's seven of you.

Then Mizzy remembers that Zindaras and Guardian are technically the same person. Six of you.

Skruffs, Hasdgfas and Y put their heads together, but there's no need. Sir Tornado is just walking down the street, twitching madly, escorted by the policeman from earlier. The policeman waves when he sees you (especially Y).

"Maybe there

still a problem," he says. "A Mr. Yosarian II was killed in his own home last night." You all gasp. "Oh, yes, he

was

in your company, wasn't he. Anyway, we're taking his roommate up to Ellipsis. Sir Tornado is the worst Seizure Party sufferer I've ever seen, and that's saying something. He'll be happier at the hospital there--it's conveniently located right across the street from Epilepco.

"Frankly, I can only barely begin to comprehend why he wasn't already living there. There were a lot of gizmos and pills and whatnot in their house--I guess that's probably how he stayed conscious between video games. But he won't be taking care of himself."

He pats the catatonic Sir Tornado on the head and leads him away.

TheSweatpantsNinja starts to ask, "Aren't any of the other alleys empt--" and the girl's face contorts into a mask of knowledge and suffering too great for one so young. She's

"Nothing like this has happened for over a decade," Mizzy points out. "Why now?"

"Well, the mayor normally reviews that sort of paperwork, but Patrick was in charge this time, since he's not missing. And he thought it would be cool. Okay, I told him it would be cool, but that's not the point.

"You need to go home now. If you're anywhere where you can enjoy the fireworks, you're able to get hit."

She walks to the next alley, and you hear another launcher placed on the pavement. You all walk home--some of you more fireproof than others.

She bashes him across the head. He's quiet; a bit dizzy, but he clearly has a strong skull. Mizzy keeps hitting him, and then on one attempt she overshoots and the rock goes flying, through a window in the distance. Y watches it and laughs as the glass shatters, but it's not a human laugh.

So you all beat him up. It only takes three of you this time, as Zindaras is napping somewhere. Maybe he's weaker, or you're stronger now, or it's too early in the day for a werewolf to be at full power. In any case, you all high-five and go to bed.

," says the note on the tree. It has the mayor's familiar signature on it.

It's probably a prank, but what the hell.

"Yeah, it's either Mizzy or...TSPN," Guardian says, and then there's a loud blast. TheSweatpantsNinja collapses. The mayor's note has been torn off the tree, and there's a hole behind it, just large enough to store a gun. (One of those scummy one-bullet numbers that furthers dramatic tension.) Guardian looks at the damaged note sadly, then crumples it up and tosses it to the sleeping Zindaras.

Mizzy leaps up and flexes her sharp nails, but before she can attack, Hasdgfas gasps and clutches at his stomach. He's bleeding profusely. There's a little dry spot on his shirt where a band-aid might have been placed, but that slowly goes red as well.

He feebly points gestures at Mizzy--no, behind her. She narrows her eyes and leans in toward Hasdgfas when Guardian taps her on the shoulder. She reflexively lashes out, but he grabs her hand before it can connect and kicks her to the pavement.

He sits on her to keep her from getting up, inspects those fingernails, the way her nose gravitates toward Hasdgfas's blood no matter how much effort she puts into keeping her reflexes imperceptible. "Your pack's all dead," he tells her. She doesn't respond for a few seconds, and then she nods slowly. Guardian starts to smile when she swings her other arm at him.

He's only human. He falls a couple of yards feet away--a couple of yards closer to the street. He stands up, dusts himself off, and says, "This was already a success. You can't kill me yet, not on your own in broad daylight. I'll call my boss and tell him that the second-hand riches of Ellipsis are ours. I'm sure he'll be able to spare something to deal with you.

"I don't know what happened to the mayor, but we'll need a new one eventually. Heh. In a corner of the world as old-fashioned as Caret, clearing off the werewolf threat is probably a valid prerequisite."

"I'll be right back--you're not

Then he runs off. Mizzy gets to her feet and stalks over to Zindaras, but she knows he doesn't matter. With a still-metaphorical tail between her legs, she runs out into the day.

As noted in the rules, the three of you are attuned to frequencies beyond the range of a normal human's ear. Any living werewolves may daytalk freely. I'd appreciate it if you'd forward me your transcripts, though this is not required.

Every night, you can attempt to put a round of lead through another player's vital organs. If that player is vulnerable to lead, it will die.

The idea here was that the three daytalking wolves and the serial killer who couldn't kill them would have to duke it out in thread. Items were supposed to make things less swingy: people would consistently receive them, but they couldn't be cleared by having them, so a nightless game in which the hitman died immediately could still be played with stuff happening overnight. There might have been a cult scare when the kills stopped coming; it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Didn't turn out well. This was painful to watch after town lost the majority, and Skruffs cleared Guardian.

I feel slightly better because you lynched town Day 7, but still pretty bad.

I underestimated the scum; four is a lot even with only one nightkill per night--maybe even because of, since there were no crosskills. (I don't think Zindaras ever realized the significance of "if that player is vulnerable to lead." Guardian eventually did, though not immediately.)

I should have thrown more triggers in; there was no hint of a serial killer, and even if he'd been lynched, the wolves would have gotten that kill, which was intended to be a lifeline if the hitman died early, not an automatic game-winner if it died late.

There were two no-lynches over seven days, and even so you did pretty well with activity. Heh.

Thanks to everyone who played, a set containing the replacements and the active people who didn't need replacement, and to Patrick for being a voice of sanity and shit. And a *hug* for Skruffs.

The deadline mechanic was a good idea. The two main issues seem to be one-liners and having to gamble on other people being active. Personally, I'd rather like to steal a revised version: There is a grace period of X weeks. After that, if there is a day in which less than half the players have posted content, an absolute one week deadline is imposed. What constitutes "content" is arbitrarily determined by the mod. Actually, if I mod anything again, I'll probably use this

I like this, though I probably wouldn't give a full week for that (impatience). I worry that this cast managed to sustain itself better than the average cast would, because the werewolves needed the lynch as much as everyone else did (and there was no indication in their role PMs that they were immune to nightkills). Next time, I'm probably gonna experiment with a mystery deadline.

The daytalk was awesome while it was around. There's a QuickTopic, which I'll post after 24 hours if none of the scum ask me not to, and Eldarad and Y were PMing early on Day 1 because they were worried Mizzy was a mole for some reason.

I wasn't sure what would happen in endgame with me and one werewolf, so I wanted to try and get the lynch right.

Sorry--Zindaras asked about a 1:1:0 situation early on and I told him up-front that he trumped in endgame.

It's interesting. A psi could be some one who can communicate without being part of the group.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of scum inside scum. I had it in Cultural Revolution a long time ago (We were a cult, but two out of us were actually SKs).

I'm starting to feel some kind of connection between Mizzy and Capricious.

He's sure about there being werewolves, Mizzy comments on it. They both raised the wolfbane thing in public, but Capricious said nothing when Mizzy talked about it.

Just a feeling. What do you think?

I agree that post 118 was really...odd.
I don't think there is a connection so much as Mizzy has a vested interest in *something* but without knowing her win condition I don't know what.

This is the second time that she has told the town that werewolves are not the real threat.
We really need to push for a Capri lynch on quicktopic so that Mizzy has no way out. If we force her to hammer, we even have an excuse to push for her lynch tomorrow. (lol, I'm so evil...)

Chances are she has a post restriction (otherwise she could just say "Y and eldarad are werewolves. I know because I can read their daytalk") so that if we attack her in-thread she will struggle to defend herself. Worth thinking about in future I think.

Although it's also worth saying that I could be utterly wrong here...

Worst case scenario - We get her and get confirmed.

Then they sorta got bored with it.
