Mafia in Mobsville

The town of Mobsville was once a mafia haven, where mobsters roamed free and protection money was paid more diligently than taxes. Mobsville was a town so efficiently run by the mafia that many of the goons started to go straight, setting up legitimate businesses and settling down with their families. Before long, crime was at an all-time low and Mobsville was a peaceful, well-run town. There wasn’t even the need for a police force to operate and for a while, the people of Mobsville lived in harmony, slowly forgetting their mafia days. However, not every mafia member was happy with this turn of events and one day the town awoke to find their peace had been shattered.

‘THREE DEAD IN MOB HIT’ declared the front page of The Mobsville Herald. The shocked townspeople congregated in City Hall. Something had to be done, but nobody wanted an all-out mob war.

“The days of mafia wars in this town are gone!” cried Mayor Lamora. “I have confidence that the good people of Mobsville will apprehend these criminals and bring them to justice!” A shot rang out through the hall and Lamora slumped to the floor.

“The mayor is dead!” screamed one citizen.

“We have to catch the killers!” said another.

After some heated debate, a decision was made: the townspeople would remain in City Hall and vote to lynch the most likely suspects until all of the renegades were caught. The people of Mobsville now have only one weapon available; good, old-fashioned democracy. Will they lynch the culprits before they take over the town and turn it back into a criminal hotbed?

Fundamental

1. Above all, this is a game – have fun!
2. Unless it is explicitly stated in your role PM that you can do so, do not communicate with anyone outside this thread. Even then, only communicate when your role PM states you can.
3. Do not quote any communication you have with me, the moderator of the game. Depending on the circumstance, you may be able to paraphrase things I have sent you (such as a role PM). Use common sense and if you are unsure feel free to ask me via PM.
4. I’m only human, and as such, I’m bound to make mistakes. If you believe I have made one, feel free to send through a PM and tell me what you think is wrong.
5. Be courteous to your fellow player. This is just a game, and any blatant personal attacks on another player will not be tolerated. Remember that everyone just wants to have fun!

Voting, lynching and deadlines

8. For your vote to be counted, it must be bold, and in the form

Vote: playername.

The colon is optional. You may also vote no lynch by posting

9. You must unvote a current vote before voting another. Failure to unvote will cause the vote to not be counted.
10. A lynch will occur at n/2 + 1 vote then rounded down, where n is the number of players currently alive. Once a lynch is achieved, votes may not be changed.
11. At a deadline, rule nine will still be in play. If there is not a majority, then nobody will be lynched and night will begin.
12. If a lynch occurs, then the game enters ‘twilight’, where all alive players including the lynchee may converse until I lock the thread and confirm the lynch. No votes may be changed during this phase.
13. Once you are dead, you are free to make one “bah” like post, but nothing more.

Activity

14. Treat this game as a commitment, and try your best to stay active. If you will be unable to participate for a period longer than 3 days, please post indicating so in thread.
15. If a player has not posted for a duration of 72 hours, a prod will be sent upon request from a player. If the prod is not picked up within another 48 hours, you may be replaced. If I have to prod you three times you may be force-replaced.
16. Deadlines will be set at 3 weeks. Extensions may be granted if requested under certain circumstances, such as replacements very close to deadline. Extensions will not be granted in a simple case of low activity.
17. All nights will have a deadline of 48 hours. If an action is not sent in during this time, no action will be performed.

As the debate grew more heated, attention turned to Espeonage. The other townspeople declared that he must be hiding something. Finally, one of them decided that enough was enough.

"That's it!" cried Parama. "I vote to lynch Espeonage!"

"You'll be sorry!" said Espeonage as they dragged him to the gallows. "I was going to shoot the mafia!" He brandished a gun to make his point.

"Sure, we believe you," responded one sarcastically, looping the rope around his neck as another snatched the gun out of his hand. "What do you have a gun for if you're not working for the mob?" The trapdoor underneath Espeonage's feet swung open and he dangled there, struggling for breath. Eventually the thrashing stopped and he fell still, body limp and lifeless. The townspeople cut his body down and started looking for clues that he was mafia...

...but they found none. Apart from his gun, there was no evidence at all to indicate he was anything other than a good townsperson. As the townies settled down for the night, the slow realisation came to them all: they had just lynched a good man.

The second day dawned and the nervous townspeople made their way back to City Hall. Would the mafia have struck again? Everyone looked round the room, looking to see who was not there. It soon became apparent that all of them had made it through the night and, with a collective sigh of relief, the people of Mobsville settled down for a second day of debate.

The second day of debate drew to a close with everyone pointing their fingers at Super Smash Bros. Fan.

"I'm just a regular townie!" protested SSBF as everyone closed in on him, pushing him towards the gallows. "I'd never go back to the mafia!"

"That's what they all say," said Parama. "Hammertime!" Parama grabbed the rope and put it around SSBF's neck before shoving him off the edge of the gallows. SSBF fought very little as the rope cut off his air supply and he came to a quick end. The townies looked at each other, confident they had caught one of the mafia this time. For the second day in a row, the townies went through the dead person's possessions...and for the second day in a row, they realised they had made a mistake. A wallet, some keys and a phone all came out of SSBF's pockets, but nothing that incriminated him as a mafia member. Dejected, the townies went to bed, knowing they had lynched a second innocent man.

Day three dawned and the townies slowly collected for another day of debate. The atmosphere was tense; they all knew the mob's grip on their town was tightening and thus far they had only succeeded in lynching their own. A few retained the hope that the mafia would not have struck again, but those hopes were dashed when they found I Am Innocent lying face down on the steps of the town hall, two shots in the back of his head.

Knowing this town was on the verge of mafia control, the townies had to catch one of the scum and fast, or it would be the end for all of them. After reviewing what had gone on before, the townies believed they were finally going to catch some scum and Sando was the unlucky chosen one. As they backed him up towards the gallows, Parama looped the rope around his neck, dragged him over the trapdoor and then swung it open. The noose tightened with a crack...

...and the butt of a pistol poked up from a holster that had been concealed at Sando's side, while a search of his clothes revealed some piano wire in his pocket and a dagger strapped to the outside of his ankle. For the first time, the townies went to bed thinking that Mobsville might not be doomed after all.

Porochaz shook his head sadly, protesting that the scum were about to succeed and the townies nervously waited as they strung him up before desperately searching him for signs of mafia association. They began to panic as they found nothing...

...until someone discovered the flick-knife concealed up his sleeve.

As the townies made their way to city hall for a sixth day of deliberation, they were surprised to see no bloody scenes, no gruesomely murdered citizens. Perhaps the mafia had failed to claim another victim during the night? Then they realised that only three of them were left; ICEninja had not joined them.

'Isn't that ICEninja's car?' said one, pointing to a blue vehicle parked by the side of the road. The townies walked over and peered through the window; on the passenger seat was a Thermos and a pair of night-vision goggles. On the driver's seat was ICEninja, eyes staring blankly back at them, ligature marks round his neck indicating strangulation. Almaster, Andrius and Parama looked at each other; one of them was mafia and if the others failed to pick right, the town would be lost.

Hi everyone, I'm back, I see Andrius has outed himself anyway so I won't rush getting the final scene up as I have plenty of other stuff to catch up on! Congrats to the town, it was a great comeback win. Thanks to everyone who replaced in too, especially Andrius who ended up in a pretty impossible situation but still made a good go of it.

Day 6 quickly turned into a 1 v 1.

"I'm definitely town," said Parama, "so which of you two is it?"

"It's so obviously Andrius," replied Almaster.

"What are you talking about? It's clearly Almaster," cried Andrius. They both looked at Parama.

"WHY DO I HAVE TO DECIDE?" yelled Parama. For about a week and a half. Finally, he made his mind up. "It's Andrius!" he declared, looping the rope around his neck.

"Crap," said Andrius. Parama opened the trapdoor and the resigned Andrius swung in mid-air. "So close..." he croaked as his final breath was choked out of him. As he dangled there, the bulletproof vest peeking out from under his shirt and the gun hidden at his side told them everything they needed to know. Almaster and Parama looked at each other. Mobsville was safe; now the only problem was there were only two of them left to run it.

I'd read some of the MD stuff about scum being much more likely to win 3-9 setups and I wanted to experiment with something that gave the town a bit more advantage without totally overpowering them. The 'lazy' and 'slow' roles were a simple way to restrict townie PRs but still give them a little choice, in that they could obviously choose whether to be odd or even-night. I think the tracker's much better than cop in that it's not an absolute information role, plus it requires a very accurate night choice to catch scum. In hindsight perhaps I should have made the doctor non-consecutive nights, or given the scum an extra PR, but I think the game played out ok despite that. I think it slowed down a lot due to the vigilante lynch and the lack of N1 kill; I was expecting there to be 9 or 10 players left on D2 and it turned out to be 11. It stalled for a long time after that until suddenly everything became clear to the townies on D4 and activity picked up.

I thought Llama's claim was well-timed and really sent town a long way towards their mindset on D4 where they basically had the scumteam figured out. I was surprised that ICE was so ready to assume Almaster was town just because he hadn't caught him killing, but as it turned out it worked in town's favour.

Parama's agonising over the hammer was fun to watch. I thought he would come out and vote Andrius pretty quickly, but there was clearly just enough doubt there to make him paranoid. The VCA was a good way to make the decision in the end.

Finally, thanks to everyone who played/replaced in! I was a bit behind on the modding a couple of times but my main difficulty was definitely finding that Jalyn replacement. Thanks also to Parama, Almaster, ICEninja and Porochaz for sticking with the game for its entirety.
