A rash of mysterious nightly killings have put London on edge. Word on the street is that the government has been reduced to dispatching psychics and paranormal experts to combat the threat; it's anyone's guess what'll come of that, but you're not sure whether to trust those rumors, or whether you can be sure the government knows how to stop the murders.

Or maybe you're one of those "experts," and you know precisely what you have in mind. Or maybe you're harboring a dark secret...

Whoever you are, you awake to find yourself in a hospital. Odd, you think. Perhaps you've been delirious? How long have you been here? You stumble out of bed and head for the window.

The hospital...is on the moon? Why are you here? What's going on? You vaguely notice others around you staring outside in shock just the same as you, but you're too distracted to pay them much heed.

You're still recovering from the shock when you recognize that an anthropomorphic rhinocerous has approached.

At first, they speak only nonsense. Then, after a few moments, you can understand clearly -- "We have determined that two of you have been infected. Present yourselves for scanning at once."

Scanning? Infected? What on earth is going on? You glance warily at the strangers who share the room. Who will you send to be "scanned" first...?

You're not sure what "scanning" entails, but you're fairly certain you'd rather have someone else go first, just to be safe. Everyone else seems to have the same idea. They glance nervously at one another. No one volunteers.

A tall woman steps forward and speaks in a hushed voice:

"Don't worry. Just keep back and keep quiet. I'm a professional."

She purses her lips and surveys the others. She exudes authority, but more than a mite of arrogance. After seeming deep in thought for a moment, she frowns.

"We'll need to give them someone for now. Don't worry; there's no danger. Just cooperate and don't ask questions." She scans the crowd, then points at a group member. "You'll do, won't you? Be a dear and head over while I prepare for--."

The man's eyes bulge. "What? As if I'd give myself to that monster! If it's so harmless, you go first!" Some others nod in agreement and begin to surround the tall woman.

"Don't be foolish! There isn't time for this! You must do your duty for queen and country!" But they have already pushed her toward the aliens -- so aggressively, in fact, that she slams right into the leader of the aliens.

"You have committed physical assault. You will be executed." It raises what appears to be some manner of weapon.

Her eyes widen in fear. "No! I --"

But with a ray of light, she is gone.

You're a bit stunned as the apparent alien leader hands you a clipboard. "Please complete this assault charge witness report form. The criminal's identification information may be found here." He shows you the result of the scan.

But you're too dazed to think about it too much. You head aside to fill out the paperwork in silence. It seems that you'll have some time to complete what is necessary. You may even be able to make some preparations...

It is now Night 1. Actions are due by Thursday September 30th at 5:20 PM EST.

You're still reeling from that tall woman's death. Or did she only disappear? You almost don't notice that that odd fellow who keeps playing with that funny metal rod has quietly sat next to you:

"You may've noticed that some of our friends have gone off a bit. Where are they, I wonder? Do you know? Hmm?" He narrows his eyes at you.

You should feel threatened, but you don't, really. Despite his odd questions, you can tell that he's a kind...well, a kind person, at any rate. Something about him seems...off. Is he a man at all?

After a moment, the strange fellow relaxes.

"Of course you wouldn't. Not you. Listen carefully. This is what I need you to do. Give that form back to the Judoon. That's those fellows over there." He gestures to the talking rhinoceroses. "Tell them you can't complete it. Say that you don't understand. They'll take care of the rest. I'll find the rest of our friends. Can I count on you?"

You nod wordlessly.

"Good lad. Or lady. Off you go." He gestures toward...those creatures.

You do as instructed. The Judoon become agitated and leave, apparently to fetch a "licensed assault charge witness report form completion representative," while you wait. Alone.

It isn't long before you hear a strange sound from the corridor behind. A strange whistling sound...then a thud. Now scraping. You glance around. The others don't seem to have noticed.

Quietly you walk toward the noises. As you enter an operating room you see that man...torn apart...

Again in shock, you fail to notice the beast breathing down your neck. Snarling...drooling...

"Do not leave the apportioned area. Failure to comply with police forces will result in termination. However, as an assault charge witness, you are currently immune to termination. Return to the area."

He frowns and glances over your shoulder.

"Murder of assault charge witnesses is prohibited. It will result in termination. However, as an assault charge witness, you are currently immune to termination. Return to the area."

He scans the corpse with the device he used before and shows you the result. "You must, however, fill out a form. Here is the information you will require." He shows you the result:

As you join the group you notice that everyone has begun to eye that odd older woman with suspicion. You can't say you blame them; she's been smacking her lips oddly, grinding her teeth. You begin to push her toward the Judoon. She manages to free herself and begins gesturing meaningfully with a large plastic straw:

"Wait just a moment! If you let me feed from each of you just a bit, we can fool the scanners..."

"Feed from us?! You monster!"

She begins to protest, but she's already with the Judoon. You can see the dread on her face as the alien raises the "scanner." You can just catch the results as they appear on the display:

Huh? So...she's a friendly monster? She seemed awfully odd, though...

The Judoon pause for only a moment: "You are a fugitive from justice. You will be executed." The "woman" scarcely has time to widen her eyes before she is gone.

The Judoon pause for a moment as if uncertain of what to do. Could it be over?

"Our encounter with this criminal must be documented. We will process the execution of the criminal. You will await further instructions." They leave.

Night 2 will end by the morning of October 20th.

It's only now that you have come to fully appreciate that one of the men who started off in the hospital with you recently transformed into a woman sporting a quite attractive hairstyle. She has also started speaking considerably more frequently than before:

"It would appear that some of us have been 'infected' in some fashion. These police-mercenaries must be here to deal with them. I wonder what their concern is...it's odd for them to be involved over something so trivial..." You notice a few of your companions nodding with begrudging respect. "At any rate, all of us are still human. We need to find a way for all of us to escape alive."

She hesitates a little.

"The Doctor...his TARDIS should still be somewhere in the hospital. If we can get inside, we may be able to escape. I...I have some experience with it. The Judoon are distracted just now, so it's the perfect opportunity. Form groups of 2; each group will search a hospital floor." She begins handing out walkie-talkies that seem to have emerged from nowhere. "Contact me with these. We should still have about 10 minutes before the Judoon return. You there, with me. Everyone, pair up!" She pauses while everyone shuffles together, then elaborates. "Check every corner of this hospital for a blue police box."

She seems to consider for a moment, then sits down in the hay and continues once more:

"Some of you may be infected with an alien parasite. If you've experienced any unusual animal attacks in the past few years, especially ones that may have left unusual scars, you must inform us immediately. We may still be able to stop the parasite from --"

The lights flicker for a moment, then go out completely. You can hear snarling and the gnashing of teeth, and the scream of that uncharacteristically informed young woman sporting the attractive hairstyle. You feel something warm spray all over your body. When the lights come back on, they are dim. Perhaps it's an emergency generator? The walls and floor are smeared with blood. You come to realize that you are, too. And the woman from before is lying out in the middle of everything, eyes wide open.

Two Judoon return abruptly, perhaps alarmed at the noise. They approach the dead woman and scan her. Thanks to your peculiar knack for sneaking a peak at the scanner display, you manage a glance:

You're still staring at Sarah Jane Smith's attractive hairstyle. The Judoon are grunting incoherently, but you don't really hear them anymore. You can sense that you'll never make it out of this alive. Someone in a white coat sort-of opens his mouth:

Then he starts to speak. "We're going to be OK. We just need to remain calm, and --." The medical student is sadly interrupted by a lead pipe to the head. You can't be bothered with that, though, so you don't look to see who did it. You've almost given up resistance at this point. There's not much hope left.

The Judoon grumble a bit more audibly, but no one else seems to fuss much over the body. You only barely notice the text on that familiar display:

"Things have gone too far. I can't sit back and do nothing anymore."

The words snap you out of your stupor. You glance back toward the voice. He's a bit cute, isn't he? A point you consider somewhat complemented by his recent selection of fashion accessory:

Someone...someone can stop these things? He can help us get out of this alive?

"We can't stand by silently anymore. Too many innocent people have died already. We have to protect them. We have a responsibility." He says the words facing past the bodies strewn across the floor; he's staring at the huddled Judoon. They don't seem to have noticed his weapon. Where did it come from, anyway? And who is he talking to...?

He continues his ambiguously-directed monologue. "Listen to me. I'll stay here and keep them occupied. You take the others and find the TARDIS." He turns his head and narrows his eyes directly at you. "You, there." He points to Sarah Jane Smith's body. "Search her. Our reports say he gives his companions a key. Use it to open the TARDIS when you arrive."

He pauses. This is beginning to seem very familiar...

"Remember that two of you may be...well, you may not be safe. But we can't stay here.." He frowns, but then his face brightens up. "I'll take one of those scanners from the aliens and then catch up with you. We should be able to keep everyone safe this way. As for whoever's infected...well, we may still be able to help...." His face seems less certain, though. He's frowning again. Or pouting, maybe. It's hard to say.

You reach into the dead woman's jacket pocket...the key! You hide it away and glance at your companions. Together you make a run for it. You can hear the Judoon grunting behind you, but you keep running. Gunshots, the shuffling of feet....

Just then, you realize that something is wrong. Someone is missing. You do a quick headcount...only 5? Then that means that someone is...

And the gnashing of teeth interrupts the gunshots.

But you can't stop. You keep running with everyone. Something is...galloping? behind you. Coming closer...closer...

You find yourself in a black room with a large projector. You see a blue police box in the corner. Is this it...?

You repeat the headcount. Now there are 6. Maybe you miscounted before...maybe...

The projector comes alive with a start. It shows who gave his life to get you this far:

You've come a long way to get this far, and, with key in hand, you're confident that you can finally escape. You waste to no time running to the police box -- the TARDIS -- and scramble with the key. Just as you push it toward the lock, you hear a voice from behind --

"Wait just a moment. There's one more thing to be done.

"That man said that some of us are 'unsafe.' Surely we can evaluate one another and minimize the danger of traveling in that...machine? I won't escape this place only to fear for my life, and it won't do to have uncouth traveling companions."

"The mistress is quite correct.

"We must eliminate the adverse element. And we know for certain who it is now. We know that it is

The room becomes very quiet. Slowly, you turn around. A strange monk has pointed his finger directly at you. Then, with a start, the others raise their hands as well:

Was everyone always dressed so queerly? How couldn't you have noticed it before? And what's happened to their eyes?

The monk continues: "This fool is the alien element among us. We know it, for we know ourselves. Young woman, who are you?"

You? Well, you're certainly not one of

those

people, but you're no "alien element." You know who you are. Right?

"Hmph. I am Adeola Oshodi, a lab tech at Torchwood One. We were investigating alien activity at the hospital when the Judoon came and created this mess. Who the hell are you people -- ?"

But you stop. Adeola? Torchwood? Like that woman and the man with the gun? You're the same as them? Images swirl through your mind. Sometimes you're a blonde woman mourning a lost friend. Sometimes you're a man you've seen somewhere who...who knows that other you, the blonde woman? He seems sad, too. And weren't you an endearingly cranky gay man only weeks ago? Who are you?

"Wait...I'm...that's not true. I'm not...I'm one of you...I'm..." Something is burning in your head. You whimper and fall to the floor.

The monk sneers. "It should be obvious now. This fool has let it be known that she is one of of those sent to destroy us. But we are stronger than her." He gestures vaguely. "My brethren, dispose of her."

The other companions transform and quickly approach you, but you pay them no mind. All you feel now is the pain -- the pain that's been buried deep down for months now. Your mind is not your own. How long have you been someone else? Or rather -- how long have you been no one at all?

They are eating you now, but it feels almost nice compared to that constant pain that remains hidden from you no longer. You let yourself go as darkness overtakes your silent screams.

You don't exist anymore, but if you could see that white screen spanning the length of the room, you can imagine what it might say:

Congratulations again to the winners! I think Mafuyu did a good job of blending in with the town, and DGB framed the problems facing the town perfectly for her team. I was interested to see how she would handle PJ's own attempts at the same -- he'd implicated her and/or Nightson in things pretty handily IIRC -- but she managed it with surprisingly little resistance. A good job to Nightson, too, who managed to survive 4 lynches while under significant scrutiny without replacing out; I was sure he or Jesse'd end up being lynched D2 until ZF's wagon got going.

Furco made a tactical error D1 that gave the Werewolves a big advantage later on. Dry-fit's N1 target (yellowbounder = saporovirus) probably wouldn't have shaken things up too much, but his early death swung things for the Wolves considerably. CES did a good job of looking townie; I think the only player who had more than a passing suspicion that he may be scum was DGB. JS gets the same praise as Nightson for surviving so well in spite of scrutiny. I would have liked to see how he would've handled D4, though I doubt a Wolf would've been lynched. Thanks to Haylen for replacing in and putting a great effort into a difficult situation.

On the town side of things, I was particularly impressed with PJ's play early on and on saporovirus's reads just after she replaced in. PJ was usually on the right track, but scum did a good job of subtly discrediting him such that he couldn't control the narrative very well by the end of D2. He seemed to become a little frustrated as the game continued, though. Saporovirus named every single scum in turn in her first 2-3 posts IIRC, and she correctly pointed out several town wagons that might not be as fruitful. Though scum's decision to kill her was pretty haphazard at the time, it was probably one of the better options available at the time.
