The man grew wistful as he surveyed the river and the trees. He would be sad when the day came to leave this place that had become home.

Soviet-era propaganda may have blown the reality of Russia’s Far North out of proportion in the eyes of most; certainly in the eyes of foreigners to the region. Life is played amidst polar darkness and biting cold, and when temperatures begin to warm insects infest the area. But residents are, inexplicably, bound to the place. It is a unique region, rich in all respects: history, culture, religion, nature. And yet it is neglected.

The Soviets took the area and used it, building labour camps for political prisoners, amongst others. They lured citizens with the promises of high wages, good working hours, rich culture and beautiful landscapes. When the Union fell, it had taken most of these promises down with it. Wretched, drunken people fill tumbledown buildings with their sorrow. The high wages remain only in the hands of few. People spend draining hours working in mines, emerging blackened by dust. Dangerous levels of pesticides are found in rivers - sometimes sparking fires on the water. Oil spillages, soil exhaustion, overcutting of trees, urbanisation and industrialisation: all have a hand in the slow death of the environment. Only 15 percent of the urban population breathes air that is not harmful; only 50 percent of Russia’s water is drinkable. In the Soviet system, incidents such as the bursting of an oil pipeline received little or no public notice, and remedial actions were slow or non-existent. Government officials felt that natural resources were abundant enough to afford waste, that the land could easily absorb any level of pollution, and that establishing protective measures would be detrimental to the economy. They were wrong.

What is the future of the Far North?

Companies with operations based in the region are increasing layoffs. People do not have the money to sustain themselves. They don’t even have the money to change their habits in order to sustain themselves. Transporting consumer goods to the Far North is becoming increasingly expensive as suppliers lose interest in the area. If the government cannot be bothered to expend the time or energy to pay attention to the people, what hope does the local environment have?

Bailiffs are hired to evict people from their villages, but they do not provide the means for them to go any further than the next little town. Eventually, the population of the Far North will be situated around one major city, their previous homes left to waste in the harsh tundra. Crime will rise, as will alcoholism. It seems that the Russian government is buying time, endlessly shifting people from one place to another while they figure out a better solution. If it exists.

You and a few residents of your small village have decided to take matters in your own hands. The bailiffs have come for you, but you do not wish to go. The present may already be bleak, but surely it is not bleaker than what lies ahead should you succumb. If you can raise awareness of your plight, you can force the government to pay attention. You can force them to improve the conditions in which you live.

Technically, you should be compensating the villagers for their losses – they deserve an apartment in central Russia, but you're only offering a home in a neighbouring town strewn with tumbledown buildings (it would cost too much money to get them settled down in Moscow).

The town's inhabitants are (rightfully) complaining of the injustices you are committing. And you need to put a stop to this as soon as possible.

When the air is clear, you can meet with the townspeople and your partner. The villagers will be looking to force you out of their town, while you're trying to seize the opportunity to frame a townsperson as a bailiff. Someone will be forced out of the town through majority vote. You have one vote, but you have unlimited words.

Additionally, the village is prone to
purgas
– blizzards so harsh they obliterate visibility and reduce the temperature to minus 90 degrees Celsius. This is not a problem for you thanks to blizzard-resistant equipment the government has supplied you with. But the other members of the town are, thankfully, not as lucky. They must stay inside during a
purga
lest their flesh freezes. During a
purga
you can travel to a person's apartment to serve them with an eviction notice. They will immediately be forced to leave the town. You may discuss who that person is with your partner in your shared apartment. Be careful, however: some townspeople can protect and investigate others, as well as stop you from doing your job.

The second one is more tricky, but I think the mafia would choose hitman over ninja for follow the cop purposes

Hello everybody, I'm your replacement scumhunter.

Conspiracy got it down.
Watcher Cop, let's do this.

Cop with godfather can still get the other scum.
Tracker/Watcher with ninja can still verify the cop.
Doctor with a Strongman is useless.
Roleblocker can be an inadvertent threat to other town role and is useless against Strongman.

I think doc is better than watcher. You can play follow the cop with watcher, too, Con, and my fear is that if scum gets caught by a watcher, they'll just claim cop and draw out the real one.

If the watcher watched the maf killing someone, he knows that only one player targeted him (i.e. maf), there is no use for the scum to claim cop.

This should be obvious there are 2 roles anti every other PR and only 1 role that conflicts with cop.

I think watcher should be the other choice. You aren't going to get any false results with a watcher (besides the rare situation of a ninja and town PR targeting the person who is killed but that is rare). Even if there is a ninja, if I watch Quilford, Quilford dies but I get a result that nobody visited him, then even though I don't have a result, we know that the mafia picked ninja. Tracker could potentially get false negatives tracking someone nowhere if they are ninja. Doctor would be third choice

Trying to figure out what scum picked seems useless. It's going to be impossible. Maybe they were standard and went with a role that can counteract two of our choice. Maybe they knew we would pick cop so they picked godfather. It's all WIFOMy.

As much as I hate to go along with ideas the whole Cop/Watcher thing is actually the best choice. I would caution anyone who does receive the cop claim to OBVIOUSLY not hold too much stalk in ANY innocent result. We are looking for GUILTY and that really is the only result that matters, in this set up innocents dont matter and the cop cannot and will not be used to confirm town. I am really ready to get this started.

I'm back from my V/LA. And I'm confused--Quil, based on the # of watcher votes, I think it has been selected w/ 5 votes--does this mean that cop has been selected too since it was #2 on the VC and we're already done with Day zero? If so, then okay, I'm fine with cop + watcher, but if not, I do want to see what people think of a doc + watcher combo, since I think it's a pretty broken pair, honestly more so than cop + doc or cop + watcher.

Also, *waves hi to everyone I've played with before* (which feels like almost everyone...CS, Scott, Friend, glowball, and even Farside for, like, half a day :) )

I agree that Cop & Watcher is probably the most useful combo out there, as at least one informative role can detect all scum.

Scott: Said it the best. I was leaning on doc because in my heart of hearts I think ninja is an awesome role.
Scotts point about watching a player and seeing them dead with no results would confirm ninja in the game.
