i have to say though
im really impressed by the degree of formalization you've done with that set of standards
i think you should consider making threads seeking input about them so that their thoughts can inform your standards and so that those standards can be more identical to the community's
however i do still think you should keep your ultimate standards for judging under wraps, since there's no one everyone will be satisfied with whatever standards you settle onYou can't step in the same river twice.-

oh and whatever happened with thisBest Replacement: Instead of giving out a subjectively judged award for Best Replacement, we felt that replacing should simply be done if someone wants to help out. However, we are happy to announce that the staff will begin giving out "Replacement Hero" pins to users who replace into games and complete X number of games in a calendar year. These "pins" will be small JPG bars that'd go above Scummies banners or below titles in your user profile to show that you've pitched in and helped out a mod in need. The exact number of games needed for this pin is still being determined, but expect more updates on the Replacement Hero pins from zoraster in the near future! You can't step in the same river twice.-

Let me, uh, get a little more systematic about what I think a lot of people might think is missing in the scummies.
Right now, the scummies do a lot to recognize good play and good moderation. That the ceremony pulls this objective off reliably and artfully every single year is really amazing. But the site as a whole is -or *aims* to be- more than that. We have a whole Newbie queue aimed at systematically introducing people to the game, as well as a massive Wiki and literally thousands of (yes, rarer) threads centered on substantial theoretical and didactic discussion. We have a lively GD subforum filled with even more threads where people are talking constantly about topics as varied as music and politics, sex and investing. All of that rabble is integral to what MS is about, but the Scummies' categories don't really reflect that.
The idea of an inclusive award that treats as comparable the Community Contributor ethos and Professor Mafia ethos (as well as perhaps even the Best IC and Best Replacement ethoses) would do a lot to cover this part of what this site is, but there are other options that could be enacted as well or instead. There could be a public vote Scummy (or not public vote) like Game of the Year that recognizes maybe the best new GD (or MD) thread (though Speakeasy threads might have to be ignored for many reasons). I don't specifically endorse the idea of a body of work award, but there's that, too. I can't think of anything else right now bc im terrible and stuff. You can't step in the same river twice.-

in this analogy, the women are us, the non-hydrasIn post 1080, zoraster wrote:usually when you introduce a "special" category, it's because otherwise they participants would have a hard time competing in the "open" section. For examples, the LPGA is for women because professional women generally can't hit the ball as far as professional men. Under 18 national soccer teams are for teenagers because adults play better and are more physically able.
You don't generally introduce a special category to further celebrate the people who would already win the open category. You can't step in the same river twice.-

It honestly should be. The change process right now is so slow that nothing ever happens. There should at least be some period after a scummies ceremony where feedback can be taken and integrated before awards categories and whatnot are cemented for the next year. You can't step in the same river twice.-

okay, i've been given the okay to at least write something for this, and i thought that this might be a good place to talk through the specs
Here's the gist. The scummies committee faces a dilemma with respect to how it runs the nominations thread: how to collect nominations.
On the one hand, there's the current way of collecting noms: you can have users submit their nominations through a google form. This makes it very easy for committee members to track and organize nominations as well as for nominators to make submissions. A downside of this approach, though, is that it seems to inhibit discussion of and more broadly engagement with the scummies, as a thread designed around the form is relatively rigid and readers are no longer alerted through the usual channels when a new nomination is made. Users have gotten around this by posting their noms both through the google form and in the thread, but this makes nomming that much more tedious.
On the other hand, there's the old way, which also has its charms: users post their nominations in thread. This seems to be better for user engagement since it creates a situation where users discuss their nominations (especially if additionally nths, anti-noms, etc return to consideration, even if just informally) and the thread is continually active and regularly bumped. But casually posted scummies noms are much harder to organize and track, resulting in additional burden to scummies committee members. Furthermore, as unformatted posts, nominators often exclude or otherwise fail to put much work into their nominations, putting more of the load on judges to interpret the underlying body of information justifying a nomination. That's why the nomination form exists in the first place.
Here's where I come in. With a simple script, implemented for easy use on a (free) Google Cloud server much like my personality profiler thing here: viewtopic.php?p=10236529#p10236529 , we can have our cake and eat it, too. We can choose between one of three options:
- Users submit nominations in thread by completing a form copied from a bbcode template (much like how the replacements thread works: viewtopic.php?p=8911690#p8911690 ), and once the script is run, the committee will have a spreadsheet organizing all the noms in the thread
- Users submit nominations through the extant form, and when the script is run (on a regular basis? - it actually sounds tedious now that i think of it), the Scummies account or something else makes formatted posts to the nomination thread updating readers about the noms and their content
- Users complete a form hosted in a colab notebook like the personality profiler app is. As soon as they submit their form, the app simultaneously makes a post in their name to the nomination thread with nomination details communicated with perfect formatting and updates the committee spreadsheet.
I'm thinking we go for the first option, and maybe give users the option to do #3 when they'd rather do their nomination through a form instead of by handling a bbcode template. If so, I'd like you guys' help deciding on the template for each award category.
I can go for something simple like:
Code: Select all
[b]Award[/b]: Best Mafia Catcher (Paragon) [b]Nominee Username[/b]: [b]Relevant known alts (one username per line)[/b]: [b]List 1-3 game urls providing the best insight into nominee's play (one url per line)[/b]: [b]Why scummer deserves award[/b]:
where i just copy the fields from the current form, adding formatting instructions where necessary,
but we have the opportunity to do something with more pizzazz
should we?You can't step in the same river twice.-
