Of course you can join! Newbie games have a requirement that you must post every 72 hours (though other games vary from moderator to moderator) to accommodate precisely for timezones and real life situations.

This is not entirely accurate. Not all games have activity requirements of a post once every 72 hours - some mods require a post every 48 hours. The newbie mod is allowed to make this determination. If ever in doubt, check the ruleset posted by the moderator in the first few posts of the game thread. The activity requirement for a Newbie will never be more strict than once every 48 hours, though.

Um, what about me?

You currently don't have anywhere you can start a newbie game from scratch, as you've completed your two newbie games already.
You can replace into a game or go join another queue so that you can in future join Newbie games as an SE.

I had exactly the same problem a year ago. Those rules are annoying, and imo useless.
And apparently non-Mafia games and marathon games don't count. (Although this is not written in the rules, apparently it's "obvious" so they don't need to put in the rules )
Upon coming back to the site a year later, having practically forgotten how to play mafia but wanting to try it again, I find out this rule is still in place, as is the rule that one must have only one account, and it's almost impossible to find a newbie game to replace into as you need to be checking this thread all the time.

The rule was brought into being because the SE queue had grown too big with players not moving out of the newbie queue. I suggest trying the open queue rather than the micro for your next point of contact with the site (although an open micro would work the same) In terms of complicatedness, there usually isn't much in those (and if there is they'll still usually be someone that has played the particular setup before)
I think I've seen someone try to get away with Marathon games before, which aren't as obvious as non-mafia games.

Also if you're looking to replace in to a certain type of game, you're more likely to have more luck if you're proactive. Contact some/all the current moderators and ask to be placed on a replacement list for their game. You'll then get first preference should a slot become available. (unless complete newbies have right of way)
All players that have preemptively contacted me to replace into one of my games have successfully been able to replace in as soon as a slot has become available.
