It was an extremely close decision and some extra judges had to come in and break up some ties.

Aw.. The super-secret judging forum is gone for me to go back and check, but I think I was pushing for BTTF town. It was a pretty close battle.

Ok, good to know. I was very proud how the Town there played from 'best' to 'worst' player and was sad that it didn't look like it got any significant consideration.

from a completely disconnected position as someone who wasn't a Judge -

My honest opinion is that the Cyclical Mechanic should have hands down won the category. It is by far (IMO) the most innovative change to a core Mafia game.

I love Magua but the 'Auction' mechanic had previously been done at least once (in fact I think Zoraster ran the game IRIC) and attempted in OhGodMyLife's abandoned Drinking Themed game before Magua ran it.

Team Mafia is an awesome

. And I highlight the word for a reason. It's not at all a fundamental change to how the game itself is played. The extra excitement and other elements that it brought to the table have everything to do with the inherent bragging rights and much less to do with the fundamental 'change' to the game.

Cyclical (while having some set-up flaws in the initial run that were easily correctable as noted by the playerbase) introduced huge new elements in making properly reading Town as important as reading scum and also encouraging new forms of scum-hunting with the trading mechanics while retaining all normal scum-hunting elements.

The decision of the Scummies Judges is a difficult one. No chance everyone is going to agree with the decisions.

I don't see anything wrong with exchanging opinions about personal thoughts on given Awards.

There certainly is a long history of post Oscar / Emmy / Whatever award you want to stick here Ceremony assessment and input from commentators and interested parties.

It's not like anyone has come in here and cried "I WAS ROBBED ITS A POPULARITY CONTEST" blah blah blah.

Pedit: Yeah. But ultimately, Cyclic's flaws were to do with the way the mechanic as opposed to a set-up thing. Part of the core mechanic was that passing scum to scum resulted in death (or something like that). Sure, it was definitely innovative but it didn't work as well in practise and while innovation is something that I think should be rewarded I don't think a broken mechanic should win 'best'. Cyclic 2.0 was far better, and fixed most of the problems I think.

See that's where I think you are wrong. The core mechanic is the passing of powers on a Nightly basis. That's the Core of the Cyclic set-up. The manner in which passing between Mafia teammates is penalized and the set-up is tweaked to hit the sweep spot between Mechanics Masterbation (which I spearheaded in the First Edition) and straightforward scum-hunting is really secondary to the Passing Mechanic.

It's really a great concept that I think more Mods should consider. It lets everyone have the possibility of being a Power-Role and encourages both good Town hunting and good Scum hunting. I'll be the first to admit my Town hunting isn't a strong element of my game and playing in all three games run by Kunkstar (including the original Mini Theme) helped strengthen those skills.

In all seriousness I don't think it is bad that Magua won for his game. I don't think it would be bad if Team Mafia would have won. I believe that Cyclical really is something special as far as changing the dynamics of how Mafia is played and kunkstar really deserves recognition for his path-finding in that regard.

FF6 Mafia featured a varient of the system whereby most 'powers' in the game were passed back and forth between players based on the lynches / Nightkills.
