Nearly a century had passed, and still the rumors persisted. Villagers worked and slept day and night in the shadow of the magnificent castle upon the mountain. No one had ever been spotted entering or leaving the ancient structure in recent memory, but the people still whispered about an old man with the face of a sea slug who lived in solitude. Some even said that a light could be seen on the full moons in one of the high windows of the castle. Perhaps the old man was reading, or perhaps it was just a mirage.
Most of them scoffed, and waved the stories away as nothing but gossip and hearsay. But there were those that believed. Not only did they believe in what the grapevine claimed to be true, they believed that there was a chance. A chance for them to inherit what had shadowed over them, what had mocked them and their humble means for all their lives. A chance for them to sleep warm each night, and explore the mountainside each day. A chance for them to live out their lives as the Blue Dragon did.
An expedition of sixteen men and women started the journey up the mountainside one cold winter morning. Despite the heavy snow and rain, and the dangerous terrain, all sixteen of them arrived safely at the magnificent double doors that had stood untouched for who knew how long. With their combined strength, the sixteen men and women forced open the ancient doors, and for the first time cast their eyes upon the enormous hall that would decide their fate, one way or another.
At one end of the hall were several fighting pits, filled several lengths high with dust that had collected. At the other end was a smooth marble dance floor. And in the center of the hall, surrounded by columns that stretched up towards the darkness where the ceiling lay, was a dining table that could hold a feast fit for a king.
At the head of the table, where the man of honor would traditionally sit, was a man who did not hear nor see the small party intrude into his home, and final resting place. The man was dead. He was nothing but a skeleton, in fact.
The sixteen stared at the man in awe, and at the mask of the Blue Dragon, which rested upon the man's skull, hiding the empty sockets that had once seen so much. Then they shift their gazes to each other, as it finally began to dawn on them what was to come, and what they would have to do.
The Game had begun again.
