According to me, once a majority has been reached for the day's lynch, the vig cannot use his ability.
If he uses his ability before the lynch is reached, his vote is canceled the moment he dies.

Crime Family
An italian mob family splits into two factions after the godfather dies. Both want each other dead, but have to deal with the pesky citizens of the town.
3 mafia from family A
3 mafia from family B
10 townies
1 vig
Here's the catch: The mafia all know each other. Family A knows every member of family B and vice versa. Of course, the mafia are all bulletproof to eachother.

I don't like games with multiple factions; its already a pain to have 1 mafia vs 1 scum vs 1 SK in endgame, you wouldn't want a mafia A vs mafia B vs Mafia C etc. standoff...

The whole setup is broken, the cop is useless, his investigations are as good as your guess or mine. Add a godfather in there, and you will never see the light of day. The only hope for a correct investigation would be for both cops to have an innocent, both cops to get a guilty, etc.
I would have a naive/paranoid cop and a real cop, with no godfathers. The insane one would always get the same result every night, while the real one would get the correct one every night. Day start.
But this is getting really complicated, why not just put a roleblocker instead of a doctor ?

Well, as long as the alignment is revealed upon death, one can discard a few possibilities. For example, if the godfather died, all the innocents would be confirmed by investigation.

5 vanilla townies
1 1-shot day-vig miller (doesn't know he's a miller)
1 mafia 1-shot day-vig
2 mafia goons
1 random person among the 5 vanilla townies and 2 mafia goons will be un-day-vig-killable.
1 random person among the 5 vanilla townies and 2 mafia goons will be a hostage-taker. The hostage-taker must announce his victim in-thread, and until night, if the hostage-taker dies, the victim dies by the same mechanic that kills the hostage-taker. One hostage can be taken each day.
