Scrabble: Use your Words!

AboutPlay your tiles, and build up a story as you go!
Players: 2-4

  1. Tragedy
  2. Twistedspoon
  3. Kcdaspot
  4. tclawren

RedCoyote - /in to replace or for second game
    gandalf5166 - /in for second game
This game is just like normal Scrabble, except as well as playing a game, you're building up a communal story as you go.

If you place the first word on the board, you'll need to say a line about the word: if it's "goat", for example, you might say: "Once upona time,, there was a grumpy little goat."

Each time you play a word, you'll need to add to the story with a line or two that use that word.

If you make more than one word on your turn (by adding letters to existing words and changing them), you'll need to use all the words you've made.
I will be keeping track of the story as well as points in the next post.

Otherwise, normal Scrabble rules apply:

Spoiler: The Rules of Scrabble
Score points by creating words from the 7 tiles on the rack and placing them on the board.

Words can run from left to right or top to bottom, but not diagonally.

The first word played must cover the star at the center of the board. Other words must use at least one tile already on the board.

The rack is refilled to 7 tiles after each play, as long as there are sufficient tiles left in the bag.

The number on each tile indicates the point value for that tile.

When placeed on the board, the total points of all new words formed by the tiles are added to the player's score.

Cover bonus squares to boost scores:
  • Pink squares double the word score
  • Light Blue squares double the letter score
  • Dark Blue squares triple the letter score.
Placing all 7 tiles in a single play earns a 50-point bonus.

A blank tile can be used as any letter, but has no point value.

Instead of playing a word, you may exchange any of your letters for random letters from the imaginary bag of Scrabble tiles. Exchanging letters scores zero points for your turn.

I may also award extra points on a whim for good additions to the story, BECAUSE I CAN.

I may also penalise paticularly terrible additions to the story, or if I suspect that you've cheated because your word is ridiculously obscure and you're also failing to use it correctly in the story.

Turns will have 48 hour deadlines. As I am using my iPod Scrabble application as a medium for aiding moderation, you will only get your hand PM'd to you at the beginning of your 48 hours for your turn, sorry about that.

Missing your deadline forfeits your turn, and a tile will be selected from your hand and random and exchanged for another.

Words will be checked for validity here, both British English and American English is allowed.

This game is mainly for fun rather than anything competitive, so if you do cheat, do so with a suitable sense of shame and guilt. Thank you.

Mod AnnouncementIntroducing the Continuity Clause and Quality Control rules!

Continuity Clause
: I reserve the right to reject a story based on continuity errors, such as the protaganist being in France one scene and then in Zimbabwe in the next with no offered explanation.

Quality Control
: If 2/3 of the other players decide that the story fragment is not good enough (and detracts from their previously written awesome parts) they are able to reject the story fragment and force the player to redo it.

This has been introduced because, ultimately, while this is for fun, we are working together as a team to produce a story that should be comprehensible and enjoyable to read.

Spoiler: The Board as it stands

Spoiler: The Story so Far - Chapter 1
PANDAS
are awesome animals. Among the awesome pandas was an awesome Panda Hero named Richard. Armed with Bamboo
SHIELD
and Chopstick Sword he set out on a quest to rid Ancient China of the tyrannical Weasel King who had usurped the Panda King's throne and restore Panda honour to Ancient China.

Unfortunately the evil weasel king had made preparations and had made his way to the
PIER
. There awaiting the king was a boat that would carry him to Australia! Fortunately Richard (who prefers to be called Rick since Richard is a boring name for someone in the adventuring field) hopped on his trusty
ZEBRA
steed Lightning and raced for the pier, causing death and destruction to the Weasel King's minions on his way.

However, the pesky minions were busy fighting and doing something else; They were using their Blow
DRYERS
, causing the air vacuum to shoot and make dust fly into the Hero's face, causing the Zebra to cry after tripping over a small pebble while they were using their
SHIELDS
.

Lightning fell to the ground, abrasions enveloping his limbs and a pebble incision in his leg

"Go on without me," he told Richard.

"Just... Go."

The Weasel King laughed and stroked his
GOATEE
. Such folly was amusing to him.

"You fool. We shall harvest the bamboo from this wilderness and import it to Australia to summon the eternal Koala Prince. You couldn't stop me for all the tea in China!"

Of course, what the Weasel King didn't know, among other things, was that Richard had a PhD in Ninja. With bamboo flips and spins he overturned the minions and moles to land on the Weasel King's vessel just as it was setting off.

"Curses, he's too powerful!" said the Weasel King to his right hand man, Admiral Thunder. "Call Agent Twisted."

"You don't mean - "' replied Thunder, quaking in fear.

"Yes I do. We need Agent Spoon now!" the Weasel King sternly replied.

With solemn understanding, Thunder began to punch in the numbers on his communicator...

Spoiler: Chapter 2
Lord Spoon appeared before the Weasel King.

The Weasel King growled, "Do you know of the situation?"

Lord Spoon answered, "Yes, My Lord."

"Very well. I expect a panda pelt to wear on my vacation in Australia. Do not fail me."

"Yes, My Lord."

Lord Spoon exited the chamber and gathered his elite squad - all of whom were equipped with and were masters of using a
SHIV
.

Lord Spoon called out, "Mount thy
ZEBRAS
! Tonight, WE HUNT PANDA!"

And with a "HUZZAH!" the Squadron set off to intercept our bamboo loving hero!

Up on the deck Rick was easily handling the foot soldiers.

"Well, that was easy," he said to himself as he kicked the last mole off the ship and into the icy waters. "Now where is the Weasel King?"

All of a sudden Rick heard someone start to clap. Slowly.

"Congratulations," said the shape coming up from the belly of the ship. "You have almost proven yourself worthy to die by my blade. But first you must go through my elite squad, the shiv masters."

As soon as Rick heard the voice say these words he found himself standing by the most terrifying looking zebra-riding anteaters on earth.

Rick sized up the situation.

"This might
TAX
me a little bit. I should actually try now." With this he started to attack with his bamboo sword.

Spoiler: Chapter 3
"I managed to get some ink from the water, Your Highness!" said the mysterious man in pink.

"Excellent, now put dip it into my awesome feather pen!" said the extremely buff'd man with a green costume.

"AH YES, FROM THE PIER, IT IS. I SHALL DO IT," said the man again.

"Indeed! I'm so awesome... my
INKER
'd pen is pretty awesome like me, but I'm always HOT..." said the Boss.

"Hey sir! It appears that the zebras are charging into our land!" Said the servant in pink.

"OH HELL NO, GET THE COWS AND POUR INK IN 'EM, THEY WON'T BE INVADING OUR CASTLE... AND MY HOT BODY... GET THE COWS READY TO SHOOT!"

"AYE AYE, CAP'N!"

Meanwhile, back on the Weasel King's ship, Richard found himself surrounded by the zebra-riding anteaters.

"Pleased to meet you, I'm an anteater," said one of the titular creatures.

"Indeed, you should join our
QUANGO
," said another.

"For too long the weasel king has oppressed our people!" One of the Zebras added

The anteaters gave him that "Know your place, you're a zebra!" kind of stare, and the zebra quietened and returned to thinking of his favourite shade of the colour chartreuse, and how it complimented his fuschia mantlepiece. He had always wanted to become an interior designer, but reincarnation had been cruel to Gabe the Zebra.

The sound of sarcastic applause came again, at a tempo slower than that of the Charge of the Light Brigade performed by sedated comatose snails. He never had a true sense of rhythm, had Spoon. He lost most of his musical ability when he quit his school's string group after becoming enraged at the poor standards of the other players. "Such knaves," he had thought. Had they no respect for the notes of heaven? Nonetheless, he was now in a position to overthrow the Weasel King, and that was all that mattered to him. Betrayal was his favourite pastime.

"Ah, Lord Spoon!" exclaimed Anteater Phil.

"Lord? I'm sure it was
Agent
," retorted Zebra Dave.

"Know your place, zebra heathen!' commanded Anteater Norman.

"He was only trying to help," interjected Zebra Victor, whilst accompanied by the humming of Zebra Franz to his favourite Vivaldi piece. Reincarnation hadn't dealt the Italian composer a great hand either, but every so often he could still have a chuckle at the dessicated lemon that was once Mozart.

In the quibbling and confusion around him, Agent/Lord Twisted began to put into place 'Operation Zilch'.

Unfortunately, I'm really impatient, so I'm going to close sign ups in 24 hours and start with 3 people if none of the existing players have a problem with it?

... And I just realised the flaw in my plan.

NB. Obviously the picture of the board in the hand you will be PM'd (within the next 5 minutes) will be outdated when it gets to your turn. Use the board in the second post (which will be updated) for reference, thanks.

I will be using this site.

I am accepting both American-English and British English spellings - or, in the language of Microsoft, English (U.S.) and English (U.K.).

The site accepts both British English and American-English spelling - it recognised both colour and color.

EDIT: I may change this at short notice as I find the layout and bright colour of that paticular site infuriating.
